Release Date: adidas Adizero Adios Pro Sunrise Bliss

The fastest adidas running shoe surfaces in a brand new colorway. Dropping early on next month, here is an official look at the adidas Adizero Adios Pro Sunrise Bliss.
The adidas Adizero Adios Pro Sunrise Bliss is set to be the model’s second color update since the silhouette’s limited release in June, which sold out in 15 minutes. The Sunrise Bliss iteration of the model highlights the shoe’s materials and craft with a disruptive aesthetic that embodies speed, created to stand out during races and on the podiums of the world’s elite events. Details on the model include the carbon-infused rods known as EnergyRods to enhance running economy and create less impact on the body. The midsole is made up of two layers of LightstrikePRO, the brand’s lightest and most responsive foam material yet, providing maximum cushioning. Finishing off the design is a nylon and carbon fiber heel plate for ankle stability while offering a smooth ride.
Retailing for $200, the adidas Adizero Adios Pro Sunrise Bliss will release on December 1st at select retailers and adidas.com.

2020.11.26 01:23 SublimeNemesis [PC][PvE][NA][18+][Modded] The Nameless (Newly opened Nov 22, 2020)

[PC][PvE][NA][18+][Modded] The Nameless

• The server was opened on November 22nd for a fresh start.
• Future server wipes will not occur unless necessary for server stability, and will be announced in the Announcements channel on Discord in advance, if possible.
• ALL RULES ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE. Any changes will be posted in the Announcements channel several days beforehand (if possible), and published in the Info channel.

Server Name: The Nameless

Map: Original Conan Exiles
PvE vs PvP: PvE map with PvP enabled for conflict resolution (if desired by all conflicted parties, with Moderator approval)
Age Restrictions: 18+
Level Cap: 60. We don't feel the need to raise the level cap, as there are ways to gain more feats, and eventually quests will be added to allow a character to earn more attribute points.
Roleplay Type: We are not ERP-centric. We have nothing against it if you wish to engage in NSFW RP. However, we do take a firm stance on ERP and consent. This is addressed below.
Server Max Capacity: 10. Once we reach a point of having 9 people on consistently at any one time, server size will be increased. Don't worry! We keep a daily eye on server activity.
Roleplay Style: Roleplay is done via text. If specific members prefer to roleplay via voice, that is fine. However, server preference is for text.
Application Requirement: There is no dedicated application. Players must instead read the Rules and Info channels on our Discord, then post a character biography. Once that is done, ping a Moderator. Do not post the secret passphrase in the ping. Upon biography approval, the Moderator will send you the server password.
Peak Play Times: As a Pacific based server, currently active game times are approximately between 11 AM through 11 PM Pacific. As we gain more players, active times may change, and peak times will be established.

Server settings:

XP Rate: 1
Gathering Rate:
Day/Night Ratio:
• Day Cycle Speed: 0.5
• Day Time Speed: 0.3
• Night Time Speed: 0.3
• Dawn/Dusk Time Speed: 0.3
HungeThirst Settings:
• Player Active HungeThirst Multiplier: 0.3
• Player Idle HungeThirst Multiplier: 0.1
Drop Equipment on Death: No
Item Durability Multiplier: Weapons, armor, and tools do not lose durability
God Avatars Enabled: No (possible change if server desires)
Containers Ignore Ownership: No
The Purge Activated: Yes (Some of the best thralls come from purges)

Server Lore:

• Our focus is on the original Robert E. Howard books. However, you may use any established official Conan lore (books, RPG, comics, movies, etc.) as long as you receive approval from a Moderator for your character ideas.
• A good webpage for figuring out which resources to draw from is the Conan Exiles Wiki, specifically the Robert E. Howard section: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conan_the_Barbarian#Original_Robert_E._Howard_Conan_stories
• We have a single server-specific deity not associated with Robert E. Howard's Conan lore: Felicia, Goddess of alchemical enhancements and farewells. "Bye, Felicia!"

Rules:

Server Ruleset: (There may be some additional information in the Rules channel in Discord, so please read that as well. The Rules channel will always have the most up-to-date rules for the server).
• If you join the server, you certify that you are 18 or over. Anyone found not to be 18 or over will be permanently banned. We don't care if you have parental permission. No one under 18 is allowed for any reason.
• NSFW RP is fine AS LONG AS CONSENT IS GIVEN OOC. OOC consent may be withdrawn at any time. Inform the other party OOC if you are withdrawing your consent. At any point where consent has not been given, or has been withdrawn, no means NO. Failure to comply with this rule will result in an immediate permanent ban.
• NonCon RP is fine AS LONG AS CONSENT IS GIVEN OOC. OOC consent may be withdrawn at any time. Inform the other party OOC if you are withdrawing your consent. At any point where consent has not been given, or has been withdrawn, no means NO. Failure to comply with this rule will result in an immediate permanent ban.
There is a three strikes policy on the following Rules. One warning, one 3 day long temporary ban, and a permanent ban.
Read the Info channel on our Discord.
• No cheating. Don't do it.
• No political or religious discussion.
• Hate speech of any sort is not tolerated.
• Use common sense.
• Don't be a dick.

Conflict Resolution:

This is a PvE server. However, if individuals wish to settle conflicts via PvP, all individuals involved in the conflict must contact Moderators and receive approval, so that PvP may be turned on briefly. During the time PvP is enabled, ONLY those engaging in PvP conflict resolution may engage in PvP. Others found to be taking advantage of the temporary PvP will be disciplined.

Roleplay:

• Your name must be roleplay appropriate to your race. If your name is not race-specific, please address why in your biography.
• You are an exile, starting from nothing. Your history may be whatever you want it to be (within reason, and as approved by the Moderators) as long as it fits within the Conan universe. You start on the server in the NOW as an exile rescued from crucifixion by the town of Haven.
• You may only have ONE religion. (This is partially lore, partially mechanics. Access to multiple altars gives unfair advantages.)
• We are aware there are a few instances of certain cultures worshipping multiple deities. As not all deities are available, and only one pair is currently available in the Exiled Lands, while you may RP as a Stygian worshipping both Set and Derketo, you may not actually take feats to worship both, and may only join a guild of those who worship your "main" deity. To do otherwise would be an unfair advantage over other players.
• You may not give away, sell, or trade items granted to you by worship to someone of another religion. Holy weapons, clothing, statues--unless the person you are trading with is of your religion, it's not allowed. Consumables are the exception--food, potions, arrows, etc., can be given or sold to others.
• We are open to and respect all genders both in and out of game. However, if your gender in game requires physical differences that are unlikely in the Conan universe, you must have a compelling reason in your biography for why the Moderators should allow your character as you have it planned.
• The Exile Bracelet, in addition to allowing you to teleport to a few select places, also sterilizes all wearers. At a later date, there will be a quest implemented to allow you to bypass this portion of the enchantment. But for now, no pregnancies, no children.
• Perma-death is not required, nor expected. If you wish to do so because of roleplay or mechanics, that's your choice. Remember, no one can pressure you into deleting or rerolling your character, should something happen in roleplay. You have complete control of your character at all times.
• Your character is required to have at least one flaw that will affect either your roleplay or gameplay. Flaws make for more interesting characters. If you choose to use one of the items listed in the Roleplay Addendum, your flaw must be severe enough to affect both roleplay and gameplay, to ensure a relatively level playing field between all players.

Roleplay Addendum:

• There are certain items available that make it possible to roleplay a lycanthrope or necromancer. However, if you would like to play either of those archetypes, your character flaws must be bad enough to offset the roleplay power you gain from said archetype. Keep in mind for a necromancer, the bracelet binds all of your powers except the ability to animate the dead (mechanically, a skin on a thrall you have obtained). A lycanthrope has no special strength or speed, simply the ability to change form.
• A perk does not give any true advantage in play. It is a skin that allows you to roleplay your character properly. On the other hand, the flaws must be something that affect both your roleplay and gameplay (Example: Jia Ling refusing to hunt animals she doesn't consider a challenge--Jia Ling cannot eat the insects she finds while harvesting, and will only eat "lesser" meat if it is prepared and presented to her by someone else).

Mechanics:

• If you die, you will automatically drop 1/4 of the money currently on your person. To avoid losing large amounts of money, it is suggested that you turn your free thespian into a banker.
• You may have a combined total of 5 mounts/combat pets/bodyguards/entertainers (NPCs) per personal home. This number never changes.
• You may keep unused NPCs in the fridge to prevent them from decaying, so that you can switch out NPCs as you need to. Note that they must have completely empty inventories to be picked up, and their level will reset.
• Thralls in work tables are excluded from the NPC limits--you may have as many crafting thralls as you have work tables.
• Thespians do not count against your NPC total. If you'd like your base to look more lively, there is a Slavemaster vendor located in Haven, who sells thespians for 10 bronze. You may purchase as many as you can afford (subject to change if we find the thespians causing more lag than expected).
• /me (emotes), /shout, and /do are all disabled. It is suggested that you state your actions as if writing a book, and put your speech in quotation marks. With that said, roleplay in the method that is most comfortable for you. Example: Jia Ling stared at Arden for a long moment, frowning thoughtfully. "Why in the Gods' name would you think THAT?" she asked in confusion.

Building:

• No monopolizing contested areas (NPC camps, harvest spawns, etc. Sandstone and wood are exempt from the harvest spawn restriction, as they're fucking EVERYWHERE).
• Each player may only have one base at a time. Clans have different restrictions, which are addressed below.
• USE COMMON SENSE! If something doesn't make sense from a "real life" standpoint, why would you do it in game? Example: Don't build a base within line of sight of someone else's base. (This cuts down on lag.) Also do not build your base within line of sight of an NPC camp spawn. Even if it works with Conan Exiles mechanics, if it wouldn't work due to roleplay consequences, don't do it.
• To cut down on lag for everyone, base size is limited to 15x15, or 225 tiles in whatever configuration you wish. If you need slightly more space, as long as you aren't going insane, it's fine. However, if you need more than just a little, contact a Moderator for approval.
• Base height is limited to 8, not including the foundation (pillars, not foundations!) level. If you need slightly more height (a small tower, a spire, a lookout post, etc., but not full floors!) contact a Moderator for approval.
DO NOT USE FOUNDATIONS unless you need to place a gate or other item that requires foundations to place properly. Wherever possible, please use pillars supporting ceiling tiles. Pillars can be placed directly on the ground without needing a foundation. 1-3 floor tiles between pillar supports will give you enough stability for most builds. Many foundations in one location causes a massive FPS drop, whereas the number of ceiling tiles, pillars, and walls needed to mimic a foundation does not.

Clans:

• Clans of more than a single player are currently disabled, to prevent the snowballing effect of several individuals pooling resources in the early game. Clans of 2 or more will be enabled when the server reaches 7 dedicated players (Moderators count, so technically we're already over 3!). Rules for future clans are addressed in our Rules channel on the Discord.

Helpful information:

• Speak to Hippocrates the Healer to receive a starter kit. Explore the town to purchase weapons, tools, dye, etc.
• Gaius the Scribe in Haven will boost your character directly to 60 (cap) if you prefer to focus on building and roleplay, rather than the survival aspects of the game.
/sethome will set your home point.
/home returns you to your home point. DO NOT ABUSE THIS! It has a 30 minute cooldown.
/warp Haven or /warp haven will take you back to the town of Haven. DO NOT ABUSE THIS. It has a 30 minute cooldown.
/kit contains some useful (free!) items, including all emotes, an improved icebox, some ice, and a thespian. It is advised that you wait to claim the icebox/thespian kit until you have established a base location. Additionally, turning your thespian into a banker is a good idea, so that you can store your money without fear of losing any when you die.
• Periodically, new items may be added to /kit. When that happens, the addition of a new kit will be announced in #announcements.
• Seasonal quests/events are planned! Any seasonal quests will be announced at least a week in advance, with the start and ending dates and times clearly posted.
Our Moderators are active and responsive (between the hours of 9 AM and midnight--subject to change if we find we need a Moderator located outside of the Pacific region), and we'd love to have you join us. Have questions? Feel free to ask in our Discord! Please ping a Moderator in Discord. Do not Direct Message a Moderator, expecting a quick response. Everyone has lives outside of Conan, and sometimes those lives take priority over the game. Pinging a Moderator on the Discord server will ensure that the first available Moderator will speak with you.

2020.11.26 01:09 500scnds [Table] Iama guy who has been living alone in an abandoned ‘ghost town’ for over 6 months. I bought the town just over two years ago. AMA! (pt 3/3 FINAL)

Questions Answers
I subscribe to your YouTube channel! Are you still seeing that one ghost? Have you gone back into that building? I completely redid that building because it creeped me out too much. It had dark carpet, dark walls, lace curtains. I ripped out the carpet, left it wood floors, painted the walls white, took out the curtains. Feels better in there, but I still don't really like being in there.
You mentioned opening it up for short time stays, would you market by leaning into the supernatural elements? Staying in a ghost town sounds perfect in my opinion. If you are a believer, then the history will make it exciting. If you are not a believer, then the absolute stillness sounds pleasantly perfect. I don't think we'll lean into it, but not lean away from it either. I won't have 'ghost tours' or anything like that, but if people want to come and look for ghosts, that's their issue. Cerro Gordo's history is what it is. It's very public. Some are 100% convinced there is paranormal history here, some think that's bogus. I don't want to push one way or the other. People can do what they want once here...
the below is a reply to the above
I understand that. Not trying to tell you anything to do with your work but I really would think about marketing to some. At least think about a Halloween/October takeover that leans into it for a few weeks. If your ROI increases from some small adjustments to the town, it couldn't hurt. But you also may have zero interest in actually turning a profit, which is equally acceptable as it is your town. Prior marketing manager here so hard to turn off the ideas. Great work with the town so far! totally! Around certain holidays it would definitely be fun. I just don't want to use it as a crutch, you know? Some towns lean on that so much. I think Cerro Gordo is much bigger than just that one element, so don't want to be known for JUST that...
Hey! I was watching your 6 month update last night. Heck of a coincidence. I love your work. The trickle supply for the water out of the mine probably needs a tank somewhere, are you storing it further up the mountain? Or is it just trickle straight into the town? Thanks for checking it out! I have a few tanks. Two 2,500 gallon tanks a bit above town. That is where water is flowing right now. Then there is two 500 gallon tanks that sort of backup those two 2,500 gallon tanks. The water comes around 400 gallons per day. Although it stopped yesterday weirdly. So we're going back down this coming week to see why.
the below is a reply to the above
Is it possible to rig up a cistern to catch rainwatesnow? Maybe some way to melt the snow, to supplement your water supply from underground and give you a backup in case of emergencies? My grandparents lived on Grand Cayman for a few years and they used a cistern for laundry and the like. I've been going over different options along these lines. There are some weird regulations about capturing water around here, but I think we may be able to do some variation of that long term.
the below is a reply to the above
Good luck!! I look forward to seeing what you do with Cerro Gordo and how you solve these problems :) Thank you!
I just watched the 6 month update video on YT, and I think the only time I got nervous for you was when you were sitting on that cart and it started to shift! How are you preparing for this winter after spending the end of last years in the town? A lot of ways. That first winter was all new to me. I grew up in Florida and lived in Texas. My truck was 2WD with street tires.
I have already stocked up on wood, slowly stocking up on food, and have a 4WD Tacoma with chains ready.
I'm sure I'll learn a lot this winter too, but I'm in a much better place than last year...
I think I may be too late to the party. But I’m a unique age that allowed me to remember your first ama on here, and then also happened to follow the sam and Colby videos when they came to visit. I was like no way I know this place! I was so sorry to hear about the hotel. How was it working with Sam and Colby? Did their videos help raise some funds towards rebuilding the hotel? Was it interesting to host the group there when you’re usually more of a lone wolf? Sam & Colby are great. Really nice guys. We've stayed in touch. Their fans are amazing and really helped towards rebuilding the hotel. I hope S&C come back for the opening party!
As the owner of the town, can you just change the name? Or is there some kind of process that needs approval? I probably could, but I like the name, also the history of the town is why it's interesting to me, so I'd like to keep it the same...
Do you get many people drop by out of the blue? When it's good weather, yeah. It's a weird situation because the town is technically 'closed' because of the pandemic and I'm trying to do work on the town.
So if I'm in a remote part of the town and someone shows up to main area, it's weird to come back and find people basically waiting/looking around your house.
My email is public and there is a sign with a phone number at bottom of hill. I just wish people would arrange visits ahead of time...
the below is a reply to the above
I guess Cerro Gordo Rd that runs through town is still a public easement, and you can't put up a gate? Technically a 'utility road' because DWP/ATT/FAA use it to access stuff.
the below is a reply to the above
Ouch. No chance of getting it vacated then. Although it's probably less likely you'll get trapped for long by a rockslide or something. Congrats on living the dream, dude. I used to travel a ton around NM and southern CO when I lived in Texas, and always fantasized about buying something way abandoned, way out in the desert. Thanks for helping preserve a critical part of our history that many people overlook. Appreciate that!
Weren't you like trapped there last winter? Lol anyway are you gonna get that place up and running soon? I sure was. Not this winter! I'm much more prepared this time around.
I hope to have people coming to stay overnight by this time next year (pandemic allowing)...
the below is a reply to the above
I for sure wanna go when you have it running! I remember that you got sick while trapped right? I'm so happy to hear you made it out and back in ok!!! I can't wait for you to open up. I'm not too far away (a couple states over). Better now! I had a few rounds of appendicitis. A few rounds because first time they treated it just with antibiotics because of pandemic. Then it came back again and I had to have surgery to get it removed. Not a lot of fun, but better now!
Have you thought about busting out a metal detector? I did a few weeks ago and found these badass Chinese coins. I need to use it more but there is so much scrap metal/nails around it is hard to find just the good stuff...
[deleted] Damn, that is one good username...
Hi Brent - just started following you and the Cerro Gordo account on IG! You’ve said that the approach increases 6,000 feet in elevation in 7 miles. What’s it like driving up? I imagine it’s 7 miles of razor sharp switchbacks? What speed do you take it? You’re 32 - do you see yourself dating in the future? Last question: have you watched Schitt’s Creek? The road can be intimidating at first (and especially at night) but I'm used to it now. I've done it a bunch that now I just get to enjoy the view. At first I was so focused on road I couldn't see anything else haha. I used to go around 10MPH all the way up. Now I hover around 20 if I'm in my truck and maybe up to 30MPH if I'm in my Polaris side-by-side...
Need a brewery? Always. I thought the 'hoist house' could be a cool brewery one day.
Can I come visit? Let's let the pandemic die down a bit, then sure! why not
How do you cope with the isolation so well? Do you meditate or anything like that? Long walks. Introvert.
Reddit.
How do you know the silver there is really played out? That's what I've been told and fancy companies determined, but I hold out hope. You could be a few inches away from the vein and not know it. One day, maybe...
Hey I've seen your YouTube videos before! Any more ghost stories? I remember you telling one about seeing a little kid in a bunk house I believe. None as concerning to me as the bunkhouse story. I still don't like going in that building.
The other one recently involved my wallet. I came back from town one day and put it inside on top of some laundry I had just done. I came back in, and the wallet wasn't there. It wasn't ANYWHERE. To the point where I had to order new cards such. Then, months later, I brought in laundry, and my wallet was back on top of this new stack. So some mischief for sure being played...
This might be a dumb question but since you put 1.4m into it, how are you still making money to buy food and stuff while running ghost town? I have a 'day job' that luckily I can do from my computer.
How do you go on about getting basic necessities like toilet paper, food, etc.. I guess, what I'm asking is, how close is the nearest Walmart? Nearest walmart is maybe 2 hours away? 2.5 maybe? I usually get supplies every 2 weeks or so in a town called "Lone Pine" which is just over an hour from the town. The store is small and variety is limited, but gets the job done
the below is a reply to the above
Can you get things delivered? I can’t see a UPS truck or a USPS mail cart making it anywhere near the town. And how is that handled if you decided to move there permanently? Do you have a registered address? How would you handle any 911 type situations? I can't. My PO Box is in Lone Pine. About an hour or so drive each way. I think that's my only option. I have to go there when I get groceries and pick up whatever is there...
911 is tough. A 7 mile steep dirt road isn't easy. Maybe helicopter if situation is bad enough?
the below is a reply to the above
Obviously there’s heaps liability having this awesome destination with potential hazards (old mines, etc.).. on one hand I’d think the state and/or federal government would have to extend basic emergency services to the town, but since you own the whole town they may not have to actually offer any support. Do you know what the situation will be? Have you started any conversations about this with any government offices about what will be available once you’re commercially operating and open to the public? With the BLM and the FAA having interests close to your town, it seems feasible that the govt at least has the capacity to get to where you are regularly. This just signs interesting as hell, I can’t wait to go watch all of your videos! FAA will theoretically clear the road in the winter if I call in the favor. It isn't a set rule, but I'm supposed to look after their stuff a bit when they're not here, and they help when they can. That type of relationship for now. But I do know people at both BLM and FAA and probably should have convos around when we're fully open...
the below is a reply to the above
As a fellow Texan I’d never been too keen on going back to Cali.. but your town has changed that. I’d love to road trip over with my husband and check your town out once you’re up and running. I’ll be following this over the next year or so and look forward to having the opportunity to eventually make it happen! Thanks for checking it out! Come on out
the below is a reply to the original answer
I love lone pine and would love to come say hi one day Lone Pine is the best! Is that where you live?
Is this your website? https://store.cerrogordomines.com/ Correct
At what point will you start dressing up as the Miner Forty-Niner and scaring teenagers who drive through the town? Who's to say I don't already...
Oh wow I discovered your channel not too long ago, what was your main driving motive for all of this? Seems like an impossible project personally Gotta also ask, how are the kittens doing? Kittens are good! Eating soft food now, which makes my life easier haha.
The drive has changed over time. When I started, I think I was looking for a cool hospitality project. Now being here so much and learning all the history, there is this overwhelming sense of responsibility. Of duty. That I HAVE to get this town to a place where more people can experience it, and leave it for generations to come. Probably going a bit nuts
Do you live there by yourself? If not, what do others do? I'm here by myself. Some people visit occasionally to help work on town, but nobody else lives here full time.
I remember when you first posted about this. So glad you've kept it up. What has been the biggest surprise you've learned about yourself during the time you've spent in your town during quarantine? Hmmm. I think I've learned to slow down. I used to rush rush rush. Mainly to avoid doing important things or sitting with certain ideas. Now I'm comfortable just sitting in a chair looking at the mountain for an hour. And not being anxious that I need to be doing something else...
[deleted] I think it's slowed me down a lot. I used to run around doing all sorts of tasks that seemed so important. But they were just distracting from things I didn't want to sit with or think about or act on. I don't get those distractions here. It clarifies things for me...
What kind of camping is available in the area? There is surrounding BLM land in the area that is available for camping. I hope one day on the back of our property to offer camping options, but for now it would be too much to manage
I follow you on tiktok! One question that bugs me sorry if you've already answered is what can you do about all that unstable dynamite, is there not a way to get a bomb disposal or similar? I just leave it there. Not worth the hassle to try to remove and I'm the only one going in most these mines, so I keep a metal record of where it is...
Hey! Love the YouTube channel! found it a few weeks ago. Curious, have you slept in the mine lounge yet? I am sure you've answered this already. Thanks for sharing with us! Hope to visit some day. Take care mate! I haven't slept in the lounge, but I did sleep in the mine the other night. That's actually what my next video is about.
I took the hoist down into the main Union Mine and had them take up the hoist so I had to be down there from around 6pm-8am. It was QUITE the experience...
I’ve seen a few comments mentioning internet access, and your mention of the ATT hot spot that does the trick for you. Do you intend to maintain the atmosphere of a relatively internet free setting, or do you intend to bring in WiFi for visitors? You stated you want people to come see the town and experience the history, and I feel some of our modern comforts would greatly detract from that, especially WiFi. It also brings me to Edward Abbey -esque thoughts on paving the dirt roads that lead to special places in the desert (don’t do it) I'd never pave our dirt road. It's difficult, but it needs to be difficult. It takes a long time, but during that time you build anticipation. And RIGHT when you want to say 'fuck it' and turn around, the town reveals itself to you, and it takes your breath away. Then you feel like you've 'earned' the stay in a weird way. And you don't want to leave.
In terms of WIFI, I don't want super fast wifi. Something so people can communicate with world if they need to, but we're not a co-working space.
Have you met any famous people? Jeff Goldblum came to film something here. That was pretty cool. He's really nice. I guess that counts?
the below is a reply to the above
Oh wow, that counts, what did he film? An episode of his show "World According to Jeff Goldblum" - it was about denim.
Hi! Just watched a couple of your videos - so cool. I love that you're filming all this! I gotta ask if you've got names for all the goats and kittens yet? I know you mentioned a couple names but not 11 names! :) OK! Here it goes. Goats - Tofu, Beretta, Bubba, Elon, Senorita Juanita.
Kittens - Gordo. The rest are still unnamed. Any suggestions?
the below is a reply to the above
Reading through your other comments, Levi has to be one of their names for sure.. Excellent call!! I like that.
[deleted] The town has a very rich history. Biggest producer of silver in California, more gunfights that could be recorded, 'ghosts', hidden treasure, everything.
I never get bored here...
Do you experience any form of corporeal inequality or tension between you and the remaining ghost populace? I imagine living in a ghost town would give you a comprehensive insight into ghost culture and society, are they actively trying to involve you in the community or are they giving you the silent treatment? I know where they like to hang out. They know where I hang out. We respect each other's space
Have you thought of getting amateur astronomers up there to take some pics of the sky? It would be an awesome place to go for a weekend to get the stars. Stars are amazing. This winter that became my obsession - long exposure photos. I'd never taken any in my life but this place is prime for them. I've really enjoyed it.
I've watched hours of your youtube channel man you are so good at it! Fascinating story. I do think you are fuckin mental wondering around by yourself up there. On that note when you are exploring mines are you careful about gas build up? I've watched other exploration videos and sometimes they have a little device that alerts to harmful gases, which you might not be able to smell. Wow, thanks for checking them out! I'm glad you like them. I bring a 4-gas monitor with me into the mines
What a coincidence! I've been getting your vids in my recommeded for weeks and decided to give in yesterday, and now you show up on the front page of reddit. Nice. I absolutely love this kind of project. Maybe because I basically grew up in one myself, my parents bought a 19th-century french textile factory and we've been renovating it for the past 20 years to receive guests in it. Do your long-term plans include rebuilding some of the old buildings that weren't there? Some of the missing 478? Also, with tourism likely to increase, how are you planning on keeping it authentic? Definitely want to rebuild some buildings lost. I have a photo from 1890s that shows a TON of buildings that aren't here anymore. However, given the buildings that are here, I can piece together where they should be...
Hey Brent, I've been following your journey for a few weeks now, just want to let you know how much I enjoy your videos! It's obvious you put a lot of time and care into the content that you edit and release. I know you just got the kittens - have you considered getting a dog as well? Thank you for watching! It definitely takes a long time for each video. That isn't my background. I'd never made a video before April, so it's all new and I'm slow. But I enjoy it
How much of the original hotel that burned are you able to salvage? was anything found in the ashes that could be incorporated to the rebuild? How are you planning on getting water for the resort? Do you wear an oxygen mask when you go down into the mines? When do you expect people will be able to come and stay at Cerro Gordo as a resort? Thanks for the AMA! I don't think resort is the route we'll take anymore. It doesn't fit the place. It also isn't the type of place I like to stay. I think it will be more like a lodge or a bed/breakfast. I think it fits the vibe here much better.
We'll have to truck up water for now, unless we find a different solution.
Not much of the hotel was left, but some original floorboards will be incorporated into the new floor
Might be too late and have missed you, but i love the YT channel, thanks for sharing such great videos. My question: how's the feeling of freedom there? Do you ever just divert from what you were planning on doing, and...decide to walk/drive in a different direction and see what you see? I feel like that would be an amazing feeling. Totally. Almost everyday. I almost plan on getting 'lost' in the late afternoon.
I'll set out with a plan. See something interesting along the way. Hike there. See something else interesting. Hike there. See something interesting. Repeat that for a long time and get 'lost'
It is an amazing feeling for sure.
(the below has been split into two, enumerated
I just watched a bunch of the videos. Two questions: 1. When you were exploring the mine where 30 people had died, where you a bit worried (or perhaps anticipating) to find them? They died in a collapse. Meaning dirt and rock fell on them in such amounts that others couldn't rescue them. So I don't think it's likely we'd stumble upon them. They'd still be under the collapse
Here is an article that mentions the collapse: https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-2006-oct-08-me-then8-story.html
"Cerro Gordo’s deadliest mine disaster struck in the early 1870s when a cave-in killed at least eight and as many as 35 Chinese miners. They were mining in limestone below the 200-foot level and failed to shore up the tunnel with timber, former Cerro Gordo mining foreman Fred Fisher told a Times reporter in 1950. Their bodies were never recovered."
2. Also, why are the mines full of jeans? Would people just run around butt naked when their jeans got teared? I've heard a few theories. First, they sh*t their pants and left them back there. Next, they had a pair of work pants and a pair of everyday pants and changed once they got there. Next, the pants were expensive and belonged to the mine not the miner so they stayed at the mine. Next, they ripped and they threw them in trash heaps back in the mine
Have you elected yourself mayor yet? Just for the heck of it. And do you allow tourists? Just now. Mayor Brent! Elected. Unanimously from all parties present :)
What’s the coolest thing you’ve dug up? I found some Chinese coins that are apparently 300 years old or so. I found some pocket-watches, old pants, dynamite boxes. All sorts of crazy stuff. Here is photos of some
Most of the tunnels (you use another term, I forget it now) look like walking while standing up straight might be an issue. How high is the ceiling in the easier to get to places? and how wide? I was watching the 'Most Dangerous' video so not thinking about that so much, but the places people might normally explore. It can be annoying. I'm 6'2" tall, so I have to hunch over in a lot of the mines. Hours of hunching over doesn't feel so good the next day! But I think it's worth it (obviously)...
What is your water access like there? You must have wells. No water! It's an ongoing issue, but I'm working on it...
What kind of temperature variation do you see at that altitude right next to Death Valley? And how are the night skies? I don't imagine you have much light pollution. So the other day it was 130 in Death Valley. A World Record I think. The Weather Channel somehow called me to ask how it was living in such inhospitable conditions. But when they called it was maybe 85 or 90 here. So I had to tell them I wasn't really in any danger.
The fact the town is at 8,500 ft really helps. It's crazy the difference, especially considering how close we are to Death Valley. The property is only 7 miles from the park's border...
Can you see Mt Whitney across the valley from Cerro Gordo Peak area or is it obscured? Yup! You can see Mt Whitney from almost all the buildings. Well, the wildfire smoke is impacting it right now, but usually. Also if you hike to the other side of the property, you have full views of Death Valley. An interesting high/low experience.
I know how to brew beer. Your town seems to be missing a brewery. Trade you brewing lessons for a stay? I'm listening...
Hello! What do you hate the most about living in the ghost town? Hmmm. I really think the positives outweigh the negatives, but lack of access to fresh vegetables and fruit is something that comes to mind. I miss my blackberries and spinach...
That video where the bar burnt down was super brutal. Were you able to salvage anything? Some things, but not that much.
The only 'silver lining' (outside the fact nobody was hurt), is that the icehouse next to the hotel was the original dump location for the hotel. So nobody has been under there in nearly 140 years. There are a lot of artifacts I hope to put in the new hotel that would have never been recovered otherwise...
the below is a reply to the above
Do you think any of the metal items may be intact enough to be restored (eg. the stove, range etc)? I'm hoping the wood burning stove from the common area, as well as the cast iron stove from the kitchen. Both took a good beating, but I'm certainly going to try. Would really tie the place back together...
Have you met the people from Ghost Adventures? Yeah! Zack and crew came out and filmed here. I didn't interact with them much, but I was here when they were filming...
After reading resortdude's excellent advice and industry insight, it occurred to me that there is a flaw in his thinking: He is thinking like a resort operator. A resort operator is in the business of supplying luxury, convenience, and serving the whims of picky patrons. However, your enterprise doesn't have follow that path: In fact, it probably shouldn't. I believe you are targetting a very different, almost opposite market: What you have to offer is an authentic frontier-style experience. And that experience is far from luxurious! It's closer to camping. I wonder if a camping operator has to adhere to the same requirements as a luxury resort operator? I imagine you'd be leaning away from modern sewage systems, and toward long-drop toilets. Surely those are still legal? And rather than feeding your guests chef-made three-course-meals, you'd be feeding them baked beans, cowboy style. And who needs propane when you're cooking everything over an open fire! Or, if you want relative luxury, you could serve modern, military-style MREs. The one thing you can't escape though is the need for a large water supply. Also, I believe fire-suppression systems are not required in single-storey buildings below a certain size, provided they have multiple exits. Anyway, just some ideas. I may be way off-base, but I still think you should check out the regulations for outdoor camping operators, and see if they differ from those of luxury resort operators. Good luck! I hope to come and visit if ever I'm in the USA ; ) I think you're right. For a while we were considering a more 'resort' type thing. But it seems crazy now after being here. It will be closer to a lodge type atmosphere..
I followed you on Youtube recently and I'm a huge fan! Are you ever scared of finding a human skull in the mines? How high is the probability of finding one? Thanks for watching! I don't think it's too high of probability. If someone died back there, they probably died being collapsed by rock/dirt, so I wouldn't find their remains. If they didn't die in a collapsed, there probably was somebody with them to take them out. I can only see someone getting into some bad gas and passing out and nobody knowing where they were as an option to find someone...
Can I come up on the weekend and you can put me and my son to work? We’d bring our own tent and food etc. It would be a good trade. We get a weekend in the mountains and you get some extra hands. Shoot me an email! [email protected]
Youtube suggested me your videos and I liked them. Have you ever been in a situation of danger while exploring a mine ? Btw I have been very sad when your hotel burned down :( It was such a beautiful building. Good luck tho The closest to real danger I've had in the mines (that I'm aware of) was 2 times: 1) Early on, I wasn't paying enough attention and stepped on a board that cracked over a bit pit. Luckily not all my weight was on it and I corrected before falling. It taught me a big lesson about boards and pits. 2) recently I explored a collapsed level of the mine (the 200 level if you saw the video) getting in and out of that was really sketchy because the roof keep collapsing big rocks when trying to get out...
How's the local McDonalds? haha, far away! There is one in the town of Lone Pine. But that's about an hour away if you factor in the dirt road
I’ve been watching your videos on YouTube for a couple months now. I’ve always wondered, when you go down into the mines, (especially the recent video of the 200 level) how do you keep track of what passages you’ve gone into? Have you ever gotten lost? Thanks for watching! I haven't gotten really lost yet. I usually use a marker. For instance I'll follow the cart track if there is still track and if I leave the track, I'll leave something where I left the track. That way, I just find my way back to the track. Not a perfect system, but works for me
I follow you on tiktok! Have you found any denim yet? And also has any old dynamite gone off down there? Lastly, what is the weirdest thing you have found down there? I've found some denim, but not THE denim. As in, not Levi's jeans yet. No dynamite has gone off yet, or I wouldn't be typing this...
the below is a reply to the above
The denim is in the cribbing! My friend and his mining partner discovered the oldest blouse known to exist and sold it to the Levi’s company. He had to free climb up the cribbing (stacked waist rock wall) about 80-100 feet. He saw a glimpse of blue from his light and reached his hand between the rocks. Pulled out the blouse but one of the sleeves ripped off. They sold it for a lot of money. Best of luck! Damn, getting this type of tip at this time of night. I feel like I need to abandoned this and get into the mines ASAP
Wait didn’t you show up on Sam & Colby? Indeed. They came out and explored. I like those guys
I was watching your video where you and a friend (I assume?) were exploring a certain floor of a mine that had collapsed where 4 miners died I believe you said. The entrance had collapsed but you found another way in? Where are those dead miners? Were they on the floor you managed to enter? Wouldn’t it be interesting to see if you could find them? I remember you said you will make sure nobody ever goes there again after you visited it The 200 level of the mine. It was probably closer to 30 miners. They died in a collapse, meaning under a bunch of rock and dirt. So I don't think we'd see the bodies. When the accident happened a lot of people tried to rescue them but couldn't, so I don't really want to go digging around to disturb them.
Here is an article that mentions it:
https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-2006-oct-08-me-then8-story.html
"Cerro Gordo’s deadliest mine disaster struck in the early 1870s when a cave-in killed at least eight and as many as 35 Chinese miners. They were mining in limestone below the 200-foot level and failed to shore up the tunnel with timber, former Cerro Gordo mining foreman Fred Fisher told a Times reporter in 1950. Their bodies were never recovered."
How are the goats doing? Love your videos! Goats are good! They're getting bigger and expanding their territory around the town. I'd like to train them to free roam and come back to a bell or something. But haven't nailed that yet...
Doubt he's still here but perhaps someone else can answer this: What is the legality regarding appointing yourself mayor, writing your own town constitution that allows you to hold the offices of mayor, secretary, etc etc, at the same time, and then create city wide ordinances that are favorable to your life style? You know? I'm still here! Where am I going? Not too much else going on Sunday in a ghost town haha. I think the county still has some jurisdiction over a lot of that, but I could try. I've also watched a documentary on 'sovereign nations' where they basically declare themselves their own nation within a different country. But you raise a good point and one I should look into more.
Do you ever hope to make money out of this town? i.e. maybe the bare minimum you'll need to survive? Or are you looking to live completely without money at some point (from the land etc.)? I hope eventually the town covers it's own expenses (and mine). But I didn't get into this to make tons of money.
Was your town ever on the show ghost adventures? If so do you think it’s haunted? It was! I actually sleep in the room they think is haunted by two children ghosts.
I don't think it's 'haunted'. Is there spirits or paranormal activity? Maybe. But if so, I think they're more curious than anything...
This is great! Good for you! I remember seeing this for sale at one point. Questions ( sorry if they have already been asked)... 1. Does Amazon deliver there/do you get mail? 2. What kind of wildlife is out there ( lizards? Snakes?) 3. Are you finding lots of photos to guide your restoration? Again...I’m so glad someone bought it who is interested in restoring it. I’m going to check out your videos. 1. No! I have a PO box in Lone Pine, which is a little over an hour away. 2. Bobcats, rabbits, birds. Not too many snakes because of elevation. 3. Yes, luckily there are quite a few photos of the town at its peak
How do the stars look at night? Insane. You can see the Milky Way, almsot every star.
This doesn't do it justice, but is a photo I took this winter...https://www.instagram.com/p/B-YQ7Tag39a/
Brent, huge fan and I’ve watched all the YouTube videos and can’t wait to see Cerro Gordo with my own eyes one day! What are your plans for exploring the mine? I saw you explored the 200 level but are there any other spots in the mine that people have not seen since the mine was active? Awesome, thank you for watching! There are a few areas that have been closed off for a long time. The one that is most interesting to me is called the "Omega Tunnel." It may actually connect to the 200 level from the outside. But the portal into it is collapsed big time. I've tried digging it out, and Robert even used 10 sticks of dynamite to try to open portal, but it's really collapsed. But it holds my imagination and I hope I can get into it one day...
the below is a reply to the above
I can’t wait to see the day you get in there! If you’ve ever heard of or been familiar with FPV systems, that may be a way to send an RC truck through a small hole to explore ahead for you. (Finding the right radio frequency to propagate through the mine also helps) I’m out in Los Angeles and when I make my way up to Cerro Gordo one day I’ll bring some FPV camera stuff for you to check out. Keep chipping away at that portal though! (Pun intended) Will do! Thank you. I'll look into those more too.
What makes an abandoned town "an important part of history"? Cerro Gordo is the reason Los Angeles is what Los Angeles is today. It shaped California. It was the largest producer of silver for the state and an important part of mining history. It's just been overlooked for a long time.
Do people often come over from the back way into town? From the racecourse or teakettle junction in Death Valley? A decent amount. If weather is good, and the weekend, maybe 4 people a day?
The issue is when people come up the main road in a vehicle that barely made it up and think they're going to take the back road to Death Valley, or even worse, that they're going to take the Salt Tram road. Have you every taken that road? It's not a joke.
After getting a YouTube recommendation, I binge watched all your videos on Sunday and thought to myself "this guy should do an AMA". Synchronicity! Were you able to connect with the man who left a comment saying he was a previous caretaker in the 80s? It would be fun to hear what stories he has to offer! Oh wow, I've never seen that comment until now! Thank you for calling that out.
Are you looking to start a business like the Old west town in New Zealand had/has https://www.cnn.com/travel/article/old-west-replica-town-sale-scli-intl/index.html Is that your end game? how you raised the capital? or just for shits and giggles? EDIT: I just followed links in the CNN story I linked, and they link to YOU!! haha haha. Awesome
Will you have buzzfeed unsolved stay overnight there? I’d like to see more footage of what’s been caught on tape They had me do a little video earlier this year. I'd love to invite them up if they'd come...
Wow thats in the middle of no where. Any incentives to get people to move there? I suppose the silver is all gone if the town was ghosted? Silver vein apparently is lost. I don't necessarily want people to move here. Just visit for the weekend or so. I think the middle of nowhere nature will attract people to unwind for a bit and experience the history and natural beauty here...
Ever plan on trying to pull more gold out of any of the mines? You said in another comment you're always exploring them. *silver! Maybe, who knows. They apparently lost the vein and there isn't enough left to make it financially viable. But you never know
Have you thought about mining silver? Just for fun? I'd like to refine small batches of the ore still here to make jewelry or something for the town...
Are there tailings piles around the mines? Have you found any interesting mineral specimens in the mines or otherwise? Yeah! Huge tailing piles. I just went through them Friday for a while looking for rocks. Found a bunch of galena (which is what they were mining here), smithsonite, turquoise, and some other stuff...
the below is a reply to the above
Awesome! Would love to see some over on rockhounds! Would you ever consider allowing access to the piles? I greatly appreciate the people who are generous to allow collecting on their property. (Though I can certainly understand why a lot of people do not, some folks just don't know how to behave) I live in NC and have not yet been west but I hope to some day soon! I let people come. There is a Gem & Mineral Society in Lone Pine and they did their 20th annual dig up here this past weekend. I have an appreciation for rocks that is growing now that I have the town...
Been loving the videos. Any sketchy things happen on the 200 level we didn’t see? My condolences to the american hotel. How big of a challenge will the delivery of rebuild materials be? The 200 was really weird. I filmed all that on my iPhone where usually I'd use my GoPro or Sony. Both of those were dead (I had just filmed a different video), so I used the iPhone. So whenever I saw something, I had to consciously think to take out phone and record. I didn't always do that because I was so in the moment taking everything in. There was a lot more dynamite in the area where I talk about dynamite. But just didn't think it was interesting to show 5 minutes of just dynamite.
Getting supplies up here is tough. That is the logistical challenge I'm thinking about right now. We need to get a loader and/or backhoe up here, but you can trailer it up. So we have to walk it up the mountain, which will take a whole day and who knows how much fuel...
the below is a reply to the above
How’s the water situation? Pump back running? Really great for the towns people to help get that going for ya. I’d freak out in the elevator. And in the mine in general knowing there’s 32 souls down there. Every noise would have me on edge. Can’t wait to visit. Pump was running, but it stopped yesterday again. So we're going to go back down this week to see why that is happening. Hopefully it's something easy to fix...
The cage definitely is freaky. Even after being down it a few times...

2020.11.25 23:51 RationalRomace Loving you is Red

The sound of keys jostling and a door opening bring me out of my daze.

“There's a Maria here!” I hear him shout in surprise. As if I am a rare species of human he found in his kitchen.

“Sometimes I come home and there's a Maria here, and it makes me so happy!” His tone full of childish glee.

A surge of pure joy overwhelms me. I wonder if my face shows how happy I feel. I kinda hope not, I’d look like an idiot. “Welcome home.”

Suddenly everything feels right. Whatever issue I was just dwelling on no longer seems relevant. Kevin is home and that matters more.

My first instinct is to ask how his day was, but stop myself, Kevin hates that question. It’s too mundane! He would gripe I hate talking about work. But there’s no need to ask anything, he is already telling me all about something exciting. I can tell by the way his hands start to gestate wildly. He paces around the living room putting his things away, settling in. His mouth races a million words a minute. He is so animated, like watching a cartoon come to life. It’s fun to experience.

“.....and they're making a sequel!” He concludes slightly winded and looks over at me for a response.

Shit. What was he talking about?

“Oh cool.” I say anyway. Making my eyes wide so he thinks I know why it’s cool. “How do you think that’ll go?”

He continues to talk and I make sure to pay attention this time. I am not terribly interested in movies but they make him light up and I do thoroughly enjoy that.

Nothing about our interactions would point to a couple that has broken up. We spend the rest of the afternoon basking in each other, talking and giggling like childhood friends. Maybe it’s because we know we only have a few more months together that we are able to enjoy each other so profoundly. Our lease will end and that is when our break up will stop being something we talk about and turn into something we live. But for now, we pretend otherwise.

The breakup was all his doing. I was perfectly content with our life. We were settling into the next phase. A phase I had been dreaming about since I met him, since I recognized that I had found who I wanted to spend my life with. Kevin was instead restless and doubtful.

Kevin: Are you happy? The text came in at work.

His question didn’t strike me as odd, on occasion Kevin asked me this and other vague philosophical queries out of nowhere. I didn’t jump to anything being out of place.

Me: Yes I am. I answered truthfully. Are you?

I knew he wasn’t. He had been distant these past few weeks. I could tell settling into the apartment wasn’t giving him the fulfillment he expected to receive from achieving this long term goal. His next question slapped me in the face.

Kevin: Do you think we would be better as friends?

NO. No. No. My brain immediately yelled. Of course not. No.

A second message came in before I could answer.

Kevin: We already interact like friends, we’re not very romantic with each other. What would be the difference?

A LOT! I took a deep breathe. I hoped to god this was another thought experiment of his.

Me: No. We wouldn’t be better as friends. What I get out of our relationship could not be done with the intensity and frequency of a friendship. And we could be more romantic, nothing is stopping us except what we’ve let ourselves get used to.

I typed fervently. Trying not to work myself into a panic mid shift.

Me: Can we talk about this in person please? This feels important.

Kevin: No it’s okay, you get home late we can talk about this another day.

Me: No. You’re talking about a breakup Kevin. I can’t put this off. Wait up for me.

Kevin: Yea okay.

I got home at midnight but he wasn’t there.

Me: Where are you?

Kevin: Doing laundry. I’ll be right down.

It took him a half hour. He was trying to delay a scary conversation, but I wouldn’t have it. When he got in I had a bottle of wine and two glasses poured, I knew we would need some liquid courage to talk about this. We started by talking about anything else for the first hour. He didn’t want to bring it up and neither did I. I realized, after enough delay, that if I didn’t start it, it would go on ignored. So I bit the bullet.

“So you think we’d be better as friends?” I blurted. Trying to hide the pain in my tone.

“I was just asking what the difference would be. I’ve been noticing more and more how distant we are.”

I thought that’s how you liked things! My inner voice cried

“But we’ve always been this way.” I said

“I know. But I don’t think this is the relationship I want.”

But it’s the one you created! I weep.

“We can work on it. If you want more romance I want that too. I just thought that you didn’t want that so I don’t push it. But we can do something about it.”

“I don’t think we can.”

“Why not?”

“We’ve said it before that we would try to be more affectionate and nothing ever changes. We’re just going to keep saying it and nothing is going to change.”

“I never knew you wanted to break up because of it! That brings it to a whole new level of seriousness.” I am sobbing at this point. Feeling a desperateness I’ve never experienced before.

“It should just come naturally. It’s not right that we have to work for something that should just be part of a relationship.” He says adamantly,

“But if we both want it, what is wrong with having to work on it until it becomes normal? I don’t understand.”

We continued to argue but go in circles. By the end he became more adamant that there was no solution to our problem except ending it.

“I am not breaking up with you. I just want us to think about it.” I knew him enough to know that was a lie. Kevin hated making decisions. He had a tendency to give me non committal answers so I would have to make the decision. That way when it didn’t work out, he wasn’t at fault.

We went to bed that night after a 3 hour conversation. I laid there in utter panic, foolishly trying to go to sleep. After an hour of turmoil I got up went into the living room, put on my favorite movie and sobbed until Kevin woke up for his next day of work.

He looked at me from across the room saying nothing, eyes full of grief. He approached me right before leaving. I looked up at him and sniffled. He put his hand softly on my head. “ I am leaving. Can I kiss you?”

I nod “Please.”

As he walks out of the apartment, leaving me alone with my sadness I start to remember the day I fell in love with Kevin.

I stare at my phone in absolute awe. It’s quite hot. Did we really just talk for 7 hours? I was so scared to even have a phone conversation to begin with. Texting is my comfort zone. I was so sure there were going to be awkward pauses and we weren’t going to have much to say. But neither of us stopped talking or laughing the whole night. I open my phone to text him, he has work in a few hours. I have a five am shift in 20 min.

Me: Sorry I wish we could keep talking

Kevin: So do I. Have a good day at work.

I can’t stop smiling. I am trying to, I don’t want my boss to think I am drunk or something. My body feels like it’s on fire,. For someone who hasn’t slept all night I am incredibly energetic. High. I realize. I giggle all the way to work reliving our conversation. Once I am parked outside, it strikes me like a sudden jolt. Fuck. I am in love with him. I smile harder. My jaw hurts. Every cell in my body recognizes this new truth. I am in love. I didn’t expect love to feel so certain. I’ve never been in love before, but I am usually very bad at knowing how I feel. Where was the part where I hem and doubt and question myself about what should be and what can’t be and yadda yadda yadda? But no. There’s not an ounce of doubt in my body, this morning I am in love. I keep saying it in my head and it creates more fire. I am in love.

Kevin and I had quite the unconventional start to our romance, in fact we credit the rocky infrastructure as the result of its demise. All I know for certain is that when we met, we clung to each other like we were dying of thirst and our connection was a tall glass of water. We became best friends immediately, constantly baffled at how alike we were and how many common interests we shared. I admired how ridiculously entertaining he was, and he loved my intelligent and accepting personality. It only took two dates and a few phone calls to know we had found something unique, and were not letting it go.

The problem was that although Kevin and I had found something intense and special, I was not ready to do the girlfriend thing. I had just left what I described as a ‘suffocating relationship’ and Kevin had left a relationship where he had been cheated on. Both of which happened for us around the same time. It felt like fate had made those things end at exactly the time that would lead us to each other. After that relationship I was ecstatic to be on the dating scene and having a lot of fun exploring what being a single adult was like. I assumed Kevin wouldn’t be ready for something serious either, so soon. I came up with a compromise.

“What do we do?” He asked me.

My answer came off with more confidence than I had. “Have you ever heard of polyamory?”

“I am not sure.”

“We date. But we keep seeing other people too.” I simplified.

“You want to keep dating me while you date other people?”

“You can keep dating too!” I clarified. Wanting him to take this well.

“Oh..” He said and looked out the window.

“What do you think?”

“Just let me get this straight. You want to make me your bottom bitch?”

I crossed my arms “Um.. I don’t know what that is but it doesn't sound good.”

He laughed “You’ve never heard that before? You’re from Atlanta!”

“Is that supposed to imply something? Just tell me what it means.”

He explained it to me and I scoffed.

“I can’t believe you just said that.”

“I am just trying to understand.”

“Look! I like you. We both just got out of disastrous relationships. This seems like the middle ground we are looking for.”

“I didn’t know we were looking for middle ground.”

“Ever since I heard about it I wanted to try it.” I said and shrugged.

He thought for a while and I shook my leg in anticipation.

“I guess we could try it.”

I smiled. “Really?”

He nodded. Wow he really is the coolest guy ever.

“But you’re going to have to help me through it.”

“Oh of course. I’ve done a lot of research on it.”

“Yea? How?”

“I listen to tons of relationship podcasts.”

He gave me a skeptical look “Okay Maria. I’m trusting you.”

It went well at first.

Kevin: I have a date with a young lady today.

The message came a week later solidifying what we were to become. Okay, this is it. This is the part where I feel angry and upset and take back my decision. Instead I found myself smiling. Utter relief filled my system. Good. I can handle this. But, who is this girl? Does Kevin have a type? I am fascinated. I am excited.

Me: Great! I wanna know all about it

We remained in a deep state of limerence. Kevin lived in Fort Collins an hour drive from Denver. To see him I borrow my mother's car. I filled with anticipation the entire way. I try not to speed but it’s impossible knowing going faster means seeing him sooner. I play Taylor Swift's Red. No other album captures my feelings better than this one. I sing along, pull the windows down and speed up, checking to make sure no police are around as I leave the city. Will I ever be as happy as I am now, twenty years old experiencing her first love? I don’t know, but I take it in just in case.

When I get there Kevin’s broad grin greets me. I jump out of the car and into his arms. This is the moment I think about the entire ride here. The moment that I get to feel him, smell him and kiss him. We kiss until we have to stop ourselves because we’re in a parking lot in the middle of the day. I’ve only known him for a few months, but that doesn’t seem to matter in the least.

I go home very late, and the next week he comes to me. We take turns from Denver to Fort Collins, to have the funnest dates of my life. Kevin became my favorite person. I tell him things I never dared say out loud before. We get to know each other quickly and in deep intimate ways. The people I was going on dates with begin to pale in comparison to the love I was experiencing. It was all bliss.

Until...

“You’re still sleeping with your ex!?” I scream into the phone. It felt like someone punched me. My throat closed up and I couldn’t swallow.

“I wasn’t going to.” He said. “But when you said we could sleep with other people I thought why not.”

Silence.

“Why? Is that wrong?”

2020.11.25 23:49 RationalRomace [RO] Loving you is Red

High. PE ME TFS Exam Passed - DTC Review
Repost - the original post was somehow chopped and only had the first half left. I had to re-type half of this post. I certainly don't want to do it for a third time.
Just saw the green icon on my NCEES account. I thought a review would be beneficial for future test takers.
TL;DR - DTC is good. I recommend.

My background

I passed the FE in 2012. I forgot most stuff I learned in school. I am in MA, where the board takes pride in preapproving applicants to sit for the PE exam. For some personal reasons, I didn't take the PE when I first became eligible, but need to take the exam fast now. I then decided to take the exam through the Michigan PE board so I don't need to wait for the MA board's approval.
I started the exam prep in early September, took the exam in mid-November. About nine weeks of prep time.
It was very difficult nine weeks. My job is very demanding. Many times I cannot finish my conference call until 11pm (a few occassions, 1am.) For the two months, I never went to bed before 2 am. Anyone with young kids would know that they don't care when you go to bed, they are waking up screaming on their own schedule. As a result, my sleep was severely deprived. But now, all hard work is paid off.

Preparation, with DTC, and a little bit with SoPE

I spent some time researching the prep courses and purchased DTC's $50 trial module. The first impression was that Dr. Tom talks really slowly. I found it extremely slow-paced. Someone from Reddit was kind enough to send me all the DTC handouts (Thank You!) and I thought I could save $700. Later I found that it is still helpful to check out the video just to make sure you have the right understanding, as well as the correct solution to the practice problems. I then purchased again the Pay Upfront $750 package - very strange and interesting pricing here: if you buy the remaining modules, that would cost you $800, more expensive than buy again the whole thing for $750.
I rushed through all the course materials in 5 weeks. The DTC course content is very top-heavy. The first three course weeks are very thorough, lots of lots of stuff. My first week of prep went through three course weeks of material and it was very intense. The later course weeks tend to have less and less material. I was able to go through a full course week in a workday, after my daunting full-time job. So I'd say, maybe an hour or two can finish a whole course week. I suspect Dr. Tom did so to make his trial module looking good, but the course actually does not have that much to cover after all.
I need to make it clear that I did deviate from the so-called Dr. Tom's method a bit. I did not work on any of the NCEES problems at this point. I just skipped them. I worked on all the sample problems and challenge problems by myself before checking the DTC videos. A lot of times, a 3 minutes video would only take me about 10 seconds because I just want to check around halfway and see I am applying the correct formulas, and at the end to make sure I got the result right. For some harder questions, I would go through the video with more time and understand where I had it wrong. Even this won't take more than 1 minute.
I also didn't do the quizzes, 5-week exams, and final exams until I finished all 20 course weeks. I used the DTC quizzes as a refresher of the material. Then the 5-week exams to gauge my speed. Finally, I went through the two 2-hour final exams twice to make sure I have plugged all the holes.
Against Dr. Tom's advice, I spend the next weekend doing the NCEES practice exam as a real practice test, making the condition as close to the actual exam as possible. It was a long day but in the end I scored barely enough to reach 70%. I knew I was ready. The follow week, I went through each and every question of the practice exam. I also noted down a few questions that I knew I would be strategically giving up if encountered in the actual exam. That following week, I went through the questions untimed again to make sure I can get them right if I see them on the exam.
This is about six weeks into test prep. The same one (Thank You again!) sent me some SoPE workshops as well as a refresher on economics. I spent 1-2 hours on the economics, primarily focusing on how to read the A/F, A/P tables, and never touched this topic again. The workshop questions are way too complicated than the exam. One doesn't need to take the real exam to tell that. I used them to make sure I understand the questions completely, rather than to gauge my speed. By the end of that week, I knew I was more than ready. I tried to reschedule the test to an earlier date but was unsuccessful. So everything was going as I have planned.
The last two weeks have been getting myself mentally prepared. Very light in studying. I took the last week before exam off to adjust my daily routine. I took some pills to help me go to bed early. The last weekend before exam, I spent a full day with my kids, not touching anything PE related.

The exam day experience

The Pearson Vue handles everything quite professionally. There was some construction going on right above the testing center, so I can hear workers dragging stuff on the floor, talking and singing. The testing center offered me a noise canceling ear phone but I requested a set of earplugs instead. It didn't completely eliminate the noise but once I focused on the questions, the noise didn't bother me.
The 24 inches monitor is a bit crowded but managable. The reference handbook does not have a "next page" button so I must scroll fast at times, for example, to get to the right superheated steam table. That aside, it wasn't bad. The search function is not top notch but also not too bad, at least better than I had thought.
My AM session has 39 questions. I worried that the PM session could be hard so didn't try too hard on the flagged questions. After going through the flagged ones, I went through all questions again and checked scratch papers to make sure no obvious errors like wrong units. I ended my AM session with 5 hours left on the clock.
I had a light sandwich and two energy bars at the break. Went outside for some fresh air, then solved a Sudoku to relax. I wish I prepared more food, because by the time I was done, I was exhausted and starving.
The PM session was a lot easier than I had thought. I regretted saving so much time for it. I ended up solving each question twice, literally twice, by punching in the numbers in my calculator twice. I did found two errors though. Good effort.
The test difficulty is very similar to the DTC problems. I had a few surprises where I had no idea how to solve the questions. Mostly they are some concept not covered by DTC. Those questions are very straight forward, requires nothing but plugging in numbers into a single formula. Unfortunately, I only got to know this after getting back from the exam and some Googling on the concept I didn't know,

Overall impression of DTC

I think DTC is mostly on point, with the correct emphasis on the high value topics. As I mentioned, it didn't cover 100%. I had about 14 questions that I had no clue on how to solve, leaving me a thin margin of 10 questions to the passing 70%. I also understand that there's basically no way that one can cover 100%. So I can accept that.
What I appreciate is that DTC's difficulty seems very much inline with the actual exam. Maybe very very slightly more difficult. I feel confident when reading those questions and immediately know how to solve them.
My biggest problem with DTC is that Dr. Tom talks reaaaally slooooooowly. He tends to read out all the numbers in the calculation, which helps me nothing but wasted my time. I wish there's a 150% or even 200% speed option. Also an example is that he would pause for ten seconds after stating that if you haven't worked on the problem, you should pause the video and do it now. The pauses are not long enough for anyone to solve the problem, but also too long for anyone who really pauses the video. Completely unncessary IMO. He also says "we appreciate the opportunity to allow us help you prepare for this exam" at the end of each video, which, I'd appreciate if you could skip that and save me more time. I won't go through my video-watching strategies as I have mentioned it above. The bottom line is, you have to find your own way of consuming the videos.
I can see Dr. Tom is really trying hard to answer questions on his forum. I suspect it's his one man show because most of times, it would take him 1-2 days to answer questions, which are not too many, to be honest. It may not be a problem if you have more time but it is a bit troublesome to me as I was in such a rushed schedule.
Dr. Tom sounds very confident by saying not to look at anything beyond DTC and NCEES materials. I'd say because of all the above-mentioned reasons, you could look at other materials with the right mindset. You could and should pick up some of the low hanging fruits that are otherwise skipped by DTC. Adjust your test prep according to your own situation, rather than mechanically following DTC.
Overall I am happy with the outcome, and therefore with the help I got from DTC.

THE END

Sorry for the long post. I hope it helps. Good luck with your study and upcoming exam.
I had thrown away all my print-outs and scratch papers - Happy Thanksgiving!

2020.11.25 20:52 MPZ1968 I Made A Deal With An Old Man In A Food Court Bathroom (Pt. 14)

Parts 1-13
About 10 seconds went by, and just like that movie, “Field Of Dreams”, with Kevin Costner. You know, that old baseball movie.
Anyway, Derek, Corey, Stephen, and Ricky, all walked out of the trees, into the clearing, about ten seconds after each other, shielding their eyes with their right hands, and dropping them as soon as they entered the clearing, looking around.
Once everyone was there, Derek asked Corey angrily, ”Dude, what the fuck happened to you.”
“Dude, what the fuck happened toYou, Corey asked in response.
“What the fuck happened to all of you, I walked in the trees and you all fucking disappeared, what the fuck”, Ricky yelled.
“I didn’t fucking disappear, you did, you all did”, Stephen yelled back.
“What the fuck was that red light, that fucking growling, and those lights in the tree tops, Where did the fucking rain go, and the fucking fog.”, Derek yelled hysterically. “ And why was it so fucking dark in those trees. This is some fucked up shit!!!”
“Guys... Guys... Calm down. Let’s think about this.“, I said, “The same shit happened to all of us, there must be a reason.”
“I don’t give a fuck about a reason, I want to go home”, Ricky said.
“Dude, if I’m busting this fucking shell wide-open, then you’re fucking coming with me.”, I said to him.
After that, we all stood there, in silence, not even looking at each other, staring at the trees that we just came out of.
Now, in case you’re wondering, how I can remember every little thing, in extremely vivid detail, and remember exactly what everyone said. I’ll tell you how.
I have what’s called a photographic memory, I remember everything. Every... Little... Thing.
I could tell you what I had for breakfast November 27, 1972, if I thought about it long enough.
Let’s see... Captain Crunch cereal, with chocolate milk.
Sometimes, it’s a blessing, but sometimes, it really sucks.
Anyway, from behind us came the loud booming voice of Bob, “Boys, you made it, congratulations!!!”
We turned around, expecting to see Bob standing in the clearing.
But, instead, he was standing in what appeared to be his office, and so were we.
He no longer wore his Florida tourist outfit.
He was now dressed in a blood red 3 piece suit, complete with a hat, a black tie with flames on it, and black wing tipped shoes.
Gone was the cigarette, replaced with a cigar.
He was standing behind an old mahogany desk, that looked to be in pristine condition. A huge black leather chair behind him.
On the desk, was a reading lamp, a huge stack of papers, a black rotary phone, a cup full of red ink pens, a clear glass ashtray, and a huge bottle of Jack Daniels, with a shot glass beside it.
The floors were made of dark hardwood, with a huge black throw rug that read, “Hellfire Records” in red letters on it, laying in front of the desk, facing us, with five black leather arm chairs positioned on the rug, around the desk, facing Bob’s chair.
The walls were made of mahogany as well, with large pictures of hellish scenes on them.
A large picture of Bob himself, wearing the same outfit as he was then, hung on the wall behind his desk, the name plate on the picture read,”Robert Belz, 1734.
“1734.”, I thought, “What the hell.”
Apparently, we all had the same thought, as we quickly turned around, and started to run back through what we thought were the trees. But instead, we ran directly into the back wall of Bob’s office, at full speed.
We all heard Bob laughing manically behind us.
“What the fuck, man”, Derek and Corey both said at the same time, as we all turned back around.
They took a step toward Bob, fists clenched.
“Easy Boys!!”, Bob said, “You don’t want to do anything you’re going to regret. Have a seat.”
“Fuck that!! You laced that weed with some shit, put something in the beer, and the coffee. How are we in here, when we were just out there?”, Derek asked in frustration.
“Is this another stupid dreamscape?, I asked.
“No, it is not, and I assure you, dear boy, I did nothing to those incentives. I mean, What are you so freaked out about, it’s not like you haven’t been here before.”, Bob said.
“What the fuck are you talking about... been here before... we’ve never been here before.”, Stephen said.
Oh, but yes you have, I believe you were on the other side of this place, and had a very interesting conversation, with my, let’s say, Right Hand Man.”, Bob said, in a cocky tone.
“What?”, Corey asked.
“Boys... you can’t really be that brain dead. I... am.”
“Wait a minute, I know who you are”, I said, interrupting Bob.
He turned to look at me.
“Really!!”, he said devilishly.
“Yeah, your last name is Belz, one L with a Z, your first name is Robert, but you told us to call you Bob. If you reverse the names, it becomes Belz, Bob.
Be... L... Z... Bob...
Beelzebub...
You’re the Devil, and we’re in Hell.”, I said.
“ Oh, that’s impressive, aren’t you the smart one. You know, after all the years that I have used that name, you are the first one to figure it out, I am impressed. So much so, that I will grant you one wish, at no cost to you. Now, what will it be?”, the Devil asked.
“Nice try, I’m not that stupid, I’ll reserve my wish for another time”, I said confidently.
“Very well”, He responded, “Now, back to business. Boys... Have a seat.”
The rest of the guys just stared at me, as we all walked toward the chairs and sat down.
Each one of our names was printed on a name plate in front of each chair.
Derek was on the far left, Stephen was next to him, on the right, I was in the middle, Corey was next to me, and Ricky was on the far right, next to Corey.
“First and foremost, I want to thank you all for agreeing to meet with me tonight.
Now, as the sole owner of Hellfire Records, I wish to offer you a lucrative recording contract with us. The details of said contract are laid out within these documents.“, he said.
He then handed us each a pile of papers, stapled together, from the large stack on his desk.
We each took the papers without saying a word.
He placed a pile in front of himself.
“Now, if you would be so kind, as to write your first, middle, and last names in the space provided at the top of the page, we can begin.
He then handed all of us a red ink pen from the cup on his desk.
We all wrote our names on the top of the front page.
“Very good boys“, he said, “Now, unlike normal recording contracts, Involving lawyers, and containing big fancy words and phrases, that only they can understand. This contract is written in layman’s terms.”
“What?”, Stephen asked.
“It means you can understand it”, I said.
“Oh, I like you.”, Bob, or the Devil, or whatever you want to call him, said to me.
“What it says, is that you agree to record three full length albums, in 7 years, at Hellfire Studios, at least 10 songs each, totaling at least 42 minutes, but not more than 60.
You will retain the rights to those songs, as well as the rights to the lyrics and music of said songs.
All five of you will be credited as writers, in both aspects.
You agree to participate in a 6 but not more than 8 month long tour, of various cities and countries, that Hellfire Records has arranged for you, to promote each album to a live audience.
All proceeds from each album and subsequent tours will be paid in full to the five of you, split equally, as well as any proceeds from royalties, merchandising, distribution, Guest appearances, or any other form of income gained by services not detailed within this agreement.
Hellfire Records will provide any and all accommodations, including, but not limited to, travel, shelter, studio time, food, drink, or extracurricular activity.
Hellfire Records will provide any payment for hospitalization, medication, or services needed, as a result of, but not limited to, injury, overdose, any medical or physical condition that may arise, while under contract.
You will receive a ten thousand dollar signing bonus tonight, simply for signing this contract.
You can read it all in full, if you want to... I’ll wait”, Bob, or the Dev-
Never mind, I’m just going to call him Bob. Ok? You’ll know who I’m talking about.
Anyway, Bob said.
We all looked at each other... Ten... Thousand... Dollars... Derek mouthed slowly.
“So, if this contract actually says, what you say it says, then... uh... we get all the money... you don’t get anything... and you pay for everything, Right?”, I questioned.
“Absolutely”, Bob said, “If you agree to the conditions laid out with in this contract, then please print your full name, sign your full name, and date it properly, on the last page, in the space provided.”
“Dude, I’m in.”, Stephen said.
“Me too, Dude. We’re gonna be rich.”, Corey said.
“Yeah man, Rock and roll”, Derek said.
All three of them signed the contract.
“Very good Boys”, Bob said, “Next”, and looked at Ricky. “Uh... I’m not too good at this sort of thing man, I don’t know”, Ricky said nervously, “Mikey, what do you think...”
“I think I’m gonna read this contract, in full, before I sign anything”, I said.
“Oh!!! Ok, I’ll wait... we’re gonna wait”, he told Bob.
“I knew you were going to be the hard sell, but, as you wish, Boys, take all the time you need.”, Bob replied.
“I will”, I replied, but, what’s in it for you?”, I asked.
“Well, Hopefully, if everything works out as planned, I will be getting something worth a lot more than money, at least to me.”, Bob said smiling.
“Uh-huh”, I said, then took the next 25 minutes, reading over the contract, as the rest of the guys just stared at me.
“While we wait, let me give you Boys you’re signing bonus.”, Bob said, as he open the top right drawer of his desk, and produced three stacks of one hundred dollar bills, and placed one in front of Corey, Stephen, and Derek.
“There you go Boys, just like it says in the contract, ten thousand dollars, all for you.
All three of them smiled, removed the little paper strap from the stack, split the stack in half, folded them in half, and placed them in their right and left pants pockets.
“Fuck Dude, I’m in”, Ricky said, “I ain’t waiting.”
“No, Ricky don’t”, I yelled.
But it was too late. He already signed.
“There you go Son”, Bob said, placing a stack in front of Ricky.
“Pop’s could really use the money.”, Ricky said smiling, splitting the stack, and putting it in his pockets as well.
I just shook my head.
“And last, but not least, you, Mr. Hard Sell”, Bob said sarcastically.
I finished reading the contract, everything seemed to be legit, no improper word placement, No fine print. No statements contradicting previous statements, nothing. But, something just didn’t seem right about the whole thing, I mean, besides the obvious.
“C’mon Man”, Stephen said.
“Just sign it Dude”, Corey said.
“Bust that shell Man”, Derek said.
Against my better judgement, I signed the contract. But instead of signing my real name, I signed it, Michael Pattick Zembler, which is very similar to my real name.
I quickly closed the booklet of papers and tossed them to Bob.
He didn’t even look at any of the signatures.
“And there you go, $10,000 for you.”, Bob said smiling.
After Bob signed each contract, he gently placed all of the contracts in the top left drawer of his desk.
I split the money, and put it in my pockets as well. I didn’t really need it. For reasons I stated before, but I was sure that someone could.
Anyway, “Now, on to the studio”, Bob announced.
“Hold up, Dude. It’s been a really jacked up fucking day, we’re all exhausted. We need to get some sleep.”, Derek said.
Bob then stood up quickly, and slammed both fists down hard on the desk, and yelled loudly, “Do not fuck with me, little boy.”
We all leaned back in our chairs, clutching the armrests tightly, as Bob continued to yell.
”I know all about the deal you made with my... associate. You don’t need to sleep... neither do you... or you... or you.”, pointing at Corey, Steven, and Ricky.
“The only one that needs to sleep is him.“, Pointing at me, “And he doesn’t have to... if he doesn’t...want...to. Now get your asses up and follow me, before you really... piss... me... off.”
We all got up quickly, and stood behind Bob in the far right corner of his office.
Bob then snapped his fingers.
Immediately, upon doing so, a wall panel opened up, revealing a long dark hallway, illuminated by flames from torches.
“Follow me, boys”, Bob said, in his happy friendly tone.
We did.
The entire hallway was made of dark gray stone, the floor and the ceiling as well, kind of like the stones that were used to built medieval castles.
We walked... and walked... and walked some more, Passing several elevator doors, with only down buttons, on the left and right side of the hallway.
The last elevator on the right, only had an up buttin, which was odd.
Finally, after about and hour, we reached a large wooden door.
Bob pushed open the door, revealing a state of the art modern professional recording studio, complete with a huge control board, with some extremely skinny guy sitting in a rolling chair in front of it, another stack of papers on the side of the control board, various recording equipment, that I had never seen before, and a brown leather couch sitting against the far wall.
In front of the control board was the recording room, a large glass window sat on the wall, between it, and the studio room.
Surprising to all of us, in the recording room, sat all of our gear, neatly placed within the room.
Stephen’s drum kit.
Derek’s three bass guitars.
Ricky’s two guitars.
And My one guitar.
There was also what looked to be a brand new, top of the line condenser microphone, three littler microphones, and a headset microphone, hanging off Stephen’s drum kit, a keyboard, and two acoustic guitars, that were not ours, in there as well.
The back wall was lined with Marshall Stacks, that were not ours either.
Various wires layed on the floor.
“That‘s our gear!!!”, Derek said, “How the fuck did you.”...
“Never mind that”, Bob said sternly.
“This is Edgar”, He announced, putting his right hand on Edgar’s left shoulder, “He’ll be your producer, and engineer as well.”
Edgar then stood up.
He was short, about five foot nothing, extremely skinny, even skinnier than Derek.
He wore black dress pants, with black dress shoes, a white button up shirt, that he had buttoned all the way up to his neck, with a gray pocket protecter in the pocket of his shirt, with one of those four in one pens in it, and no tie.
He wore the same kind of glasses that I did, except his had Blue tape wrapped around the middle of his frames, holding them together.
He looked like the guy that played the Lou is character in the movie, “Revenge Of The Nerds.”
I love that movie.
Yeah!!! NERDS RULE!!
Anyway, “Hey, Guys”, Edgar said, in a high-pitched nasal tone, while waving his right hand, open palmed, at us.
He quickly took off his glasses with his right hand, and sneezed directly into his left hand, and wiped it on his pants.
Which was absolutely disgusting!!!
Anyway, before he put his glasses back on, I saw his eyes blink, except, they didn’t blink up and down, like yours and mine do.
No!!! They blinked side to side, like an alligators.
“What the fuck”, I said to myself.
With his glasses now on, he clapped his hands, and rubbed them together.
“Ok!! Let’s get started”, he said.

2020.11.25 18:26 JayVShingala 244....hardwork pays off

Got 244 in my step 1 which I gave on 12th November. As writeups of test takers have helped me a lot with my exams, even I feel like I should write something up which is helpful. This writeup is not for people who are using ANKI as I never used it and reddit is full of writeups which are different than those who don’t use anki. Give this writeup a quick read. I feel it could help you with your prep. I’ll write in FAQ format
1) When did I start preparing for USMLE? A) I technically started studying for usmle in 2nd year of my med school just for the sake of doing it. I completed most of pathoma and sketchy micro in my 2nd MBBS year. I also did Dr. Turco’s Kaplan lectures for biochemistry in my 2nd year. After giving my 2nd year finals, I took a month break and started my preparation phase around March 2020. Lockdown implementations due to COVID19 somehow worked as a boon for me. ` 2) What resources did I use? A) I guess you already know! UFAPS and BoardsBeyond lectures for First aid content buildup. I also used hell lot of YouTube. Underrated resources like Med Bullets, Amboss knowledge bank, College textbooks also helped me a lot.
3) How long did preparation phase and dedication phase take? A) Well, as I said I started in march. Took a good head start till end of April. Somewhere around May I lost track of studies and suffered from mental issues. Got back on track by end on June. 21st June I still remember, that’s when I started Uworld and First Aid first pass. Then onwards my train never stopped till Step 1 (I am kind of OCPD individual my selves (no regrets lol!)). Completed it by end of august. Then dedication phase started around 1st week of September and I gave my step 1 on 12th of November
4) What were my scores and strategy to use Uworld? A) I was never a big fan of 2nd pass of Uworld just as many of you. So, I started Uworld system wise (also completed entire Uworld system wise so don’t wait for transition of text to random mode lol) on 21st jun. I did 50 questions per day. - 8 AM my exam starts - 9.30 AM it ends - Start review at 10 AM - take lunch break at 12 - Complete review by 4 PM -Take break till 6 - Watch 2 3 hours of BnB at 2x speed - Read FA of the contents in those 2 3 hours of BnB. That’s basically my daily routine for next two months. I completed my Uworld and first aid on 3rd of September. My Uworld score was 78%. Does it matter? No. Even if it’s 40%, It doesn’t matter. What matters is how well you reviewed your mistakes, how well you recognize you got answer correct by chance. That’s it
5) When, which and how to give NBMEs? A) I gave NBME 13 right after my 1st pass of UWFA i.e. 4th sept. I got 240 which was basically my goal (>=240). Was pretty happy. After that I started revising FA for next 14 days (completed it too). Gave nbme 15 after that, got 242. Here’s where important strategy needs to be shared. Make a sheet for each nbme containing columns of subject/system, number correct, guesses, wrong answers and To-do list. I’ll share mine in DM if you want. Review your nbmes with sheer dedication. Be honest with yourselves and identify type, quality and quantity of mistake. Now next 4 days, start learning the topics you made mistakes in. If you finish early, start reading the system in which you got the lowest score. Give NBME every 5th day. This is the only way guys. Most people give nbmes to just gain confidence and have a squirt of dopamine in their reward pathway by seeing 3-digit score. You want a great score; you need to be different. Use NBME as qbank rather than self-Assessment. Learn your mistakes and weak topics so well, you never get them wrong again. It is important to note that with every nbmes, you’ll find newer and newer fields in which you are weak in. Eat them alive and never get them wrong again. This is a fun and effective way to prepare rather than revising FA endless times like other herds of sheep.
MY SCORES IN SELF ASSESSMENTS NBME 13= 240 NBME 15= 242 NBME 16= 265 NBME 17= 269 NBME 18= 261 NBME 19= 259 NBME 20= 232 NBME 21= 245 NBME 22= 247 NBME 23= 244 NBME 24= 261 UWSA1= 269 UWSA2= 262 FREE120= 88%
IDEAL ORDER OF SELF ASSESSMENTS which I followed
13-15-21-20,16-22,17-23,19-uwsa1-24-18-uwsa2, free120
6) What was actual exam compared to self-assessments? A) Unfortunately, none of the nbmes is even near to real deal. It gives good prediction of scores though. That’s the reason I said don’t get affected by nbmes. Just learn from mistakes and move on UWSA1 and UWSA2 are somewhat ideal for usmle in terms of type of questions The closest estimate of real deal questions is free120. I had 5 questions from it in real deal which is by far highest from what I’ve seen in writeup of other people.
But still I would say, none of scores in this matter; Learn the concepts and move on.
7) What would I do different if I had the chance? A) I wouldn’t have wasted my time in doing Kaplan Lectures. They are nice to do but not of much use for Real deal. I would’ve started Amboss qbank in earlier phase. IT is good to do it first-hand contrary to usual belief of keeping it for the last. Surveys show people who do Amboss earlier score good in Uworld, self-assessments and hence in step 1 too. I wouldn’t miss AMBOSS self-assessment which comes once every year for a week.
I would’ve done BoardsBeyond qbank too along with lectures. I would start First Aid right from 1st day of my preparation phase. Doesn’t make a huge difference but saves time in the end.
I would’ve NEVER EVER EVER have done Uworld twice. Stupidest thing people do these days wasting their time doing same questions, ending with 95% in 2nd pass and thinking they are good to go. Do new questions always.
8) Last month! A) Contrary to previous (during prep phase) self-estimation that you would at least do FA thrice in last month, it’s more of anxiety month. No one I’ve heard of was able to do 100s of pages of FA in one day. As of for me, I settled for just 15 20 pages per day that’s it. This phase was really depressing as I was studying just 30 40% of what I did in preparation phase. This happens with most of people in last month. But I would say, last month doesn’t matter at all. Real deal is far more than what we can imagine. They ask questions from things that can’t be mastered in just 6 months and rather depend on your knowledge gained in medical school years right from start. So, your entire knowledge would be tested and last month is just a tiny speck on your cerebrum. Key is to keep going on without breaks; even if it’s not much, keep going without halting. Your belief on your capacity and knowledge has nothing to do with your actual knowledge. You’re far more than what you believe in those last few weeks. Believe in yourselves as god gives responsibilities only to those who had deserved it…you deserve everything…don’t consider yourselves as incapable. You’ve come this far. Just few steps more. KEEP GOING!!
9) Exam day A) Anxiety made me get up at 3 AM. I slept at 7 PM though. I laid on bed listening to motivational songs. I reached the prometric at 7 AM which is the reporting time. Centre is very ambient and feels like home. My exam started at 7.15 AM. I was anxiously reading every word of the question in my entire first block but eventually it went well. I took a 2 minutes break and then onwards my anxiety vanished. I just kept going and going through blocks and took break after every block. I was always fast at reading so saved 5 6 minutes per block which I used in the break. After 4 blocks, my remaining breaktime was 54 minutes haha. Because I am possessed with a demon which makes me fall asleep in the noon, I started feeling sleepy on 5th block. Whatever marks I lost to silly mistakes belong to this block. After this I took25 minutes long break in which I had coffee, some chocolates and mild snacks. Sat for 10 minutes with eyes closed and head down. Rest 2 blocks went well. I repeated same 30 minutes break after 6th block. Time management was my strong point which rewarded me these big breaks. There were no post October changes in my step 1. Maybe it takes time to establish implementations worldwide.
My advice is to not bring heavy food (Just chocolates, caffeine and a light snack) and take break after every block even if you don’t feel taking it. Give your maximum in the start for as long as you can as last blocks are going to be tiring.
10) Life post step1. MOST IMPORTANT PART A) Important to read this part. I am currently travelling in the remote beautiful parts of my country. I am writing this writeup in an area where there is no network, just birds chirping and river flowing…. Fresh air, bliss and serenity of nature. Just everything I imagined my vacation would be. Chances are I would still be travelling when you guys are reading this.
Tell me one thing- What do you like in your vacations? Take a moment right now and close your eyes imagining the place just as you want it to be. Take deep breath, have a giant big smile and now open your eyes. BAM! I just gave you a reason to study and keep going. Hope I cheered you up with this last point.
THERE IS LIGHT AT THE END OF TUNNEL!
BEST OF LUCK. MAY YOU SUCCEED AND GET WHAT YOU DREAM OF.

2020.11.25 13:45 MPZ1968 I Made A Deal With An Old Man In A Food Court Bathroom (Pt. 14)

What's On Today
Fuck all. Go out if you must, but stay safe. Don't be a fanny.
Today in Scottish History
On November 25 1835 the steel magnate and philanthropist, Andrew Carnegie, was born in Dunfermline. Carnegie's family emigrated to America when he was still a child, and after a succession of jobs working on the burgeoning raliways there, he became convinced that steel would be where his fortune was to be made. Deeply affected by the deaths of striking workers at one of his steel mills, Carnegie became convinced that he should use his wealth for the benefit of others. By the time of his death in 1919 he had given away over 350 million dollars.
On this day in 1897, Helen Duncan, the noted Scottish medium, was born in Callander. In 1944, she became last person in the UK to be tried, convicted and imprisoned under the 1735 Witchcraft Act. While in prison she was visited by Winston Churchill, who repealed this law on his return to power in 1951.

2020.11.25 05:55 TanzYo How I went from a 158 (August) to a 167 (November)

Hey just wanted to share my experience with the LSAT and how I managed to improve my score drastically in about a month and half of crunch time. I scored a 158 on the August Flex, though because of issues with my writing section, I did not receive my score until late September. I knew I had it in me to do better and really sat down and focused for the November test - heres how I improved my score:
Practice Tests:
My word of advice for taking practice tests is to really be honest with yourself. In the month leading up to the August test, I kind of tricked myself into thinking I was PTing better than I actually was. If I printed out a test, I would give myself a couple minutes leeway on sections if I was slow that day. For 7 sage timed tests, I often took much longer breaks between sections than the minute you receive during the flex. Small bumps like this had me thinking I was consistently PTing in the high 160s, but doing so gives you an unrealistic look on the actual test date. The second time around, I PT'd 2-4 a week under the exact conditions (same location/same time) as I expected for the actual test. My first PT back i scored a 156, but managed to bump that to my highest (174) about a week before the exam.
Schedule:
As mentioned I PT'd timed 2-4 times a week - don't force yourself to take a timed test if you're not up for it. Days I felt unenthusiastic or low energy I would take untimed test and focus on LG or LR questions that troubled me. Since FLEX tests take under 2 hours, it's not too strenuous to take full tests. I'd do that as frequently as possible, give yourself a break afterwards and come back later in the day for BR and review.
LOGIC GAMES
In all caps because this is the section where you can really make the most improvement. For some anecdotal encouragement - during my August test I froze up and guessed on 5+ questions, must of gotten -8 or more on that section. By the time I took the test in November, I consistently scored -4 or less on PTs and regularly scored -1 or -0. My advice for improvement here is to study the games by type. I only used 7sage as a resource to study and think it is sufficient. Before I followed the schedule of on and off timed PTs, I spent a solid couple weeks exclusively on logic games.
On one particular day, I would grind a specific type of game (grouping/in-out/sequencing). By focusing on one type of game you really start to pick up on inferences and patterns - its much better than just hopping around difficult games or doing random PT sections. I would write down every problem I did with a time stamp and how many I got incorrect. I used a pretty helpful system where I would mark each problem with stars depending on how I faired on the question (more stars = more difficult for me i.e. Come back to it)... I would star any question that I failed to come within 2 minutes of target time or if I got more than 1 question wrong.
Perfecting LG or really narrowing your margin of error was key in improving my PTs and ultimate test score. I pretty much did all questions from PT 1-40 in 2 weeks.
Logical Reasoning
Pretty standard advice here, but really try to move through those first 10 or so questions with speed and conviction because the end is always more difficult and you want to save your time for those questions. Once again, be honest with yourself in regards to really having a grasp on conditional logic and your ability to map out question stems. I went from having a 50-50 shot of getting flaw questions and MBT to a much higher rate of success by sitting down and really learning how to map those questions quick (even just A --> B kind of thing as oppose to trying to notate the actual idea). I pretty much took a timed LR section everyday, whether it was during a PT day or an off day. Very important to keep timing sharp and take note of the type of question you struggle most with
Reading Comprehension
I read a lot so had a bit of an edge with this section, I recommend you do the same. Stop scrolling on your phone before you go to bed and read a book. I also would wake up in the morning and read an article/book before I hopped into studying or taking a PT. I rarely took notes on when reading a section, but I would for pieces that were centered around an idea/concept/person progressing through time. Like if you reading a piece on Van Gogh or some artist and his changes throughout his career, or a science piece on an ideology and how it developed over time, it helps to mark down the different periods and characteristics of those periods. For example, Van Gogh early 1800s happy drawing, mid 1800s dark paintings/unhappy drawing, late 1800s surreal paintings (Thats all BS but you get the idea)... that really helped with inference questions for me and saved me time by not having to look back in the passage for some specific detail you read, but don't remember exactly when it came up.
Test Week/Day
The first week of November leading up to the test I laid off the gas for sure. You don't want to burn yourself out and you most likely aren't going to gain some huge understanding of a concept a few days before the test. Get into a good sleep schedule where you go to bed/wake up at the same time everyday. I took a couple practice tests that week at the same desk, at the same time, with the same morning routine I would test day. For me that routine was waking up a couple hours before the test, going for a short run, meditating for 20 minutes, eating a small breakfast w tea, then doing 2 LG questions.
Exercise is very helpful during that month of study, as is a short period of mindfulness mediation during the day.

Hope this is helpful to someone out there because I know I'm sure as hell relieved to be done with that beast of a test. Don't get too down on yourself if you didn't get the score you wanted on your most recent test because you can definitely turn it around. I remember thinking I had no chance of getting below a 160 on the August test and was broken when I found out over a month later I had gotten a 158. Getting back into the grind is rough, but an extra month or so of focus can really make the difference. Best of luck with the test and best of luck with all of your application to law school!

2020.11.25 03:28 MPZ1968 I Made A Deal With An Old Man In A Good Court Bathroom (Pt. 14)

Part 1-13

2020.11.25 01:03 mysticpcwv I Need a Second Monitor, For Mail Merge

Meant to post some tales for a while, used to work IT in a call center that accepted pament for other companies. That's a bit vague enough to not get me in trouble. The whole operation was the kind of place you go into every day and are genuinely surprised they isn't a massive raid.
Anyway, one of my favorite issues was a user we'll call Aurora, one of three administrative assistants to a director we will call Matt. And before you have any real sympathy for her, she was in her 30s and has a 4-yr degree for administrative assistant.
Before I drive in, the IT department is a 4-man team, a boss and three subordinates. Our boss has a "unique" background, with fast food management and a 2yr ITT style computer programming degree. I have a 4yr Information Systems & Operations Management degree. He is at best a good IT guy, someone you call when your system isn't working. Open a shop, build your small business a web page, get you through basic tech support. Which is what he was hired to do. And then the company grew, rapidly. He managed to drop enough jargon to sound like he had subject mastery, and was very pliable. A people pleaser. Someone who just wanted to come to work, fix people's problems, be liked, do his job, keep his nose down, and rinse, lather, repeat until retirement.
In no way was he a CIO, he didn't have the management background, the skills, the understanding, or the desire. For as much as I hated him when I left for how absolutely insane the job had become. It took a long time to look back and realize that the real issue was, he was a 20 something kid, who wanted to make some money, hired to do a job and then thrown into a position he didn't want and couldn't handle, and didn't know what to do. He was trapped.
I tried to help him. I really, sincerely did. I accepted that I was going to effectively need to spend a large amount of effort getting him, and keeping him, up to speed. Trying to explain everything I had learned (and put myself in a debt hole to get) in a totally different 4yr degree program. And he at least said as much, that we were bassakward. I had his job and he had mine.
He was a Bs and C's programmer, good, but "agile" in every negative connotation of that word. Not Agile as in the methodology, but agile in every criticism ever leveraged against agile developers. In the sense of bang it out, make it "work," don't waste time validating and documenting, and move on to something else, "good code documents itself!"
That could go into it's own story, and I'm getting long winded already. Short version, this happened while he was still accepting help, heads ups, and hadn't checked out of the whole situation.
So anyway, into the story.
Aurora is tasked with sending receipts for payments if the customer has requested one. Every day she gets a file emailed to her, in a delimited format. Should be a simple open in excel, slight clean up, save, run a mail merge. A fairly quick process.
This is also at a point in which we have just gone through a major monitor swap out, CRT to LCD, and while we have a closet full of CRTs that we could have handed back out like candy, if only more than a few computers in the building supported a second monitor, of course the user wants an LCD, and also has a computer that won't support a second monitor.
Then came the phone call, which boiled down to "Hi, I need a second LCD monitor, Matt said it was okay."
"Okay, and why are you needing a second monitor?"
"Mail merge, it just takes me forever to do the receipt letters with only one screen."
"R-i-g-h-t. Okay, I can come over to your desk and see what your process is so I can document how this will help."
"Matt said it was okay."
"I understand that, but we still need to demonstrate a business need for the expense."
"Uh, well, I already ran the letters today, you'll have to wait until tomorrow. And I don't understand what the big deal is, Matt said it was okay, so I don't understand why you won't just get me a second monitor. But fine, whatever, see you tomorrow. CLICK"
User is know to be a PITA, Matt is a known PITA. So I document carefully, send a message to my boss about the request and the plan to document the need. And bring up the most obvious question, "we have a letter vendor, why are we actively printing and mailing receipts when there is a pre-formed letter in the system that can be requested and sent through the letter vendor?"
So, next morning, knowing when she gets the report, I pop over to her desk, "oh, I don't have time to do those now, I have these other reports to work on."
"Okay, well, just give me a call when you are ready to start on those and I'll come right over."
Whole day, no call, so at 4pm I call her, voicemail.
Next morning, first thing, call her. "Hey, what happened, I thought you were going to call me when you were going to run letters."
"Oh, I told Matt what you said and that I really just couldn't do them since you wouldn't get me a monitor. He said he'd take it up with your boss during the staff meeting."
"Oh, okay. Thanks for letting me know."
Grumble, grumble, grumble
Emailed my boss a heads up, included a quote for the second monitor and a new computer, as her's was a bit of a clunker (not a "bad" machine, but very low spec, older, but more than enough for her job description), and adding a dual display video card would have been a bit pointless, sort of like a pimp my ride where the car is shot but they add in a bunch of cool tech.
Got the expected "WTF?! Thanks for the heads up."
Staff meeting occurs, I find out later that before it could even start, Matt began screaming at my boss that I "refused to help Aurora and now she can't do her job." Boss is able to fire back with a total of equipment needed, and that we were trying to simply document the business need, which she had refused, in order to justify the expense. And that, furthermore, we were a bit confused about why this issue was an issue, as not only should she not need a second monitor to do that, but that he couldn't understand in the first place how this was a task she performed anyway. Why aren't we requesting the letter in the system with every other letter.
Cue hot headed curse laden rant from Matt about how stupid and useless IT was, how his department makes all the money we were "so worried" about spending, and how utterly ridiculous it was to have to fight to get a stupid monitor from us given how much money was wasted by IT.
Basically this was how every staff meeting went, what should have been a couple hours, ended up being an all day boxing match. Each department head trying to find someone else to blame, or trying to disappear into the carpet. Save Matt, the undisputed champion of blame and shame.
Ultimately, Aurora is told to call us the next time she runs letters so "stupid IT can fill out a form and check a box or whatever."
So she does, I go over.
She. Is. Not. Doing. A. Mail. Merge.
She, opening the file in Excel, is taking a letter saved in one file and creating a new document, hand counting rows in Excel (I wish I were kidding), copying and then pasting her saved "template" mail merge letter into the new document until she has as many pages as her count. Then she goes through, manually changing the date on each letter, and hand retyping every single bit of the file data into the letter. Clicking back and forth between Word and Excel to do so.
First name, last name, address line 1, address line 2, city, state, zip, our account number, client name, client account number, first name, last name for greeting, account previous balance, payment amount, account balance.
For hundreds of letters.
Then deleting one of three paragraphs, and copying and pasting account balance again if necessary (paragraphs are effectively your account is paid in full, your account was paid in settlement, your account has a balance remaining.
Did I mention, hundreds of letters.
Then going back through and manually typing MMrs for the name prefix.
Again, for those in the back, FOR HUNDREDS OF LETTERS. And by best guess, the prefix wasn't in the file she received. Kim is a MRS, Sam is a MR, and D'Nesha or Rudra is whatever she felt like. You get the idea, she's just randomly getting it right or wrong, and not caring.
Then printing them out, not on company letterhead, not even the cheap stuff we had for the times that we needed to "send an official letter" (but not in a fine letterhead needed way), but instead on plain white paper, so no return address or any indication the receipt wasn't something someone just typed up on their own computer.
Then hand folding them, despite the 1/3 folding machine.
Then she took the stack and hand typed Avery style address labels. One. At. A. Time. Running a 30-up sheet of labels through the laser printer 30 times. For hundreds of labels. Labeling each envelope as she went. One run for the return address, one for the mailing address.
Oh yes, you read that correctly. She didn't grab the nice pre-printed company envelopes, she didn't grab the cheap company pre-printed envelopes, she didn't use the windowed statement envelopes and just adjust her letter format to show the information in the windows, she used plain white envelopes.
Then postage metered them, all of them. Leaving them unsealed.
Why, oh why, unsealed you ask? Because then they were put on Matt's desk for review. Because Matt thought it was ridiculous and wasteful to send letters unless they were "warranted." What was warranted, well, that was up to him to decide. Some customers got a letter for every payment, some only for final payments, some never got a letter. So he went through and whittled the stack down from hundreds of letters to whatever he thought was appropriate. Trashed the "un-warranted" letters and envelopes, and handed the "warranted" letters back to Aurora.
Who promptly taped the returned letters shut, and left for the post office at 3:45pm. Dropped the mail off before collection, and then went and ran any other errands that he needed her to run, eventually getting back to the office at some point after 5pm.
And, if you haven't caught it yet, he never noticed they had already been run through the postage machine, so the postage he thought he was saving the company, was literally being thrown away. Not to mention this task, was about 80% of her day. And we were paying her mileage, for using her personal vehicle to go to the post office, separate from the other employee who also went to the post office, and collected mileage. And we were ending up paying her overtime because she didn't clock out until 5:30-6pm.
I asked for the criteria Matt was using to choose warranted vs unwarranted letters. Never heard back.
I modified the file she received (adding a field to generate a letter type for the three paragraphs selection), created a proper mail merge template (in two formats, one for window envelope and one for cheap company pre-printed envelope) including conditional statements to parse the letter type field and include the appropriate paragraph, made a proper label printing template for use on the cheap company pre-print envelope so label sheets (except when reused due to partial prints) would run through the printer just once (so much explained about why her printer needed a maintenance kit all the time), pointed out that there was a machine to fold the letters, explained to her (shock/horrosurprise/amusement) that "no, just because you don't put a metered letter in the mail, that doesn't mean the postage wasn't used" ("but, like it's a barcode, don't they like have to scan it to charge us?").
I literally made it near idiot proof to do her job. I made it take a few minutes instead of her whole day.
And what, oh what do you think this got me. A "thank you," a pat on the back, high fives, appreciation for saving the company money, brownie points?
No. It got me told to order her a new computer, two brand new monitors, and tasked with fixing the file she received, setting up her new computer and monitors, and told to never do that again.
You see, Matt didn't appreciate that I dared to ask about his "warranted" vs "unwarranted" criteria, found it completely inappropriate that I would tell his employee how to do her job, was absolutely foaming at the mouth by the time he got to the shear incompetence of my comment about postage, virtually murderous that I had the audacity to suggest anything about his processes that I so clearly was too stupid to understand (using letter vendor), and filled with righteous fury that I should be fired immediately for insubordination.
My boss, blindsided, saw the writing on the wall. He either gets what he wants or this becomes a never ending war.
So, she got her second monitor, a new computer for it, a "fixed" file, a ton more maintenance kits for her printer, and to keep doing what she was doing.
And I got to keep my job. While effectively wearing a target on my back and walking through a gun range.

2020.11.24 23:57 EmptyPodium Lights By the Roadside

I’m an EMT in my childhood hometown of Hillhaven, Montana. There’s only one hospital worth the name in the whole county, Hillhaven General, so when I moved back into town after ten years living in Helena, that was the only real choice for a freshly licensed EMT.
Like anywhere else, the job has a pretty comprehensive set of rules we have to follow. Most of them are pretty simple, and common sense. Don’t break the speed limits, especially on dirt roads. Don’t try to do maintenance on the vehicles yourself, we have mechanics for that. One rule always stuck out to me as pretty strange, though: Don’t stop for someone signaling you along the road if you can’t see a car with its hazard lights on nearby. It made some sense; don’t stop the vehicle to help someone else when you have a patient is pretty reasonable. But that isn’t what it said. After thinking about the rule for most of my first six weeks of working at Hillhaven General, I stopped Jamie, one of the Emergency Medical Dispatchers who’d been working at the hospital for years.
“I have a question about one of the rules, Jamie. The one about not stopping for someone signaling you without a car. What’s going on with that?” I tried to be nonchalant about it, but from Jamie’s glare I knew I’d failed pretty badly.
“Just don’t stop. Simple as that.” Nothing else, no explanation, no stories, nothing.
No matter who I asked, I got the same answer: “Don’t worry about why, just don’t do it.” I dug through old referendums and meeting notes from the last twenty years, but even there was nothing about the rule. It was never mentioned by anyone on the hospital’s CEO, or any of the Head of Departments. It was just a dead end, so I gave up, deciding nobody actually knew why the rule existed but since it didn’t come up much, they never got around to removing it.
Weeks went by, and I mostly forgot about the rule, until I was given the duty of helping out the new guy on the team, Tom. Tom was an out of towner, not a common sight in Hillhaven, and so needed someone to help them get the lay of the land around the county. We’re pretty sparsely populated outside of the three larger towns, and a lot of the roads date back decades with little to no good documentation of them. Not problem if you’re from here, but hell if you’re new.
So, rather than send Tom out into the wilds and hope, they gave him one the older non-transporting vehicles, a beat up old SUV without most of the supplies in back, and sent the two of us out into the backwoods for several shifts. The first two were day shifts, just to get him comfortable enough with driving by landmark rather than GPS, but after that, they swapped us over to the night shift.
Three night shifts in, and Tom still had no idea where he was the second we left a paved road. We would go in circles for hours with me pointing out the same landmarks over and over again, and Tom just not getting it. He was doing badly enough I was considering trying to get someone else to train him, just to see if it was him or me that was the problem.
As it was nearing the 3 AM mark of the fourth shift, I started to notice lights swinging around in the woods off to the vehicle’s left. Tom was so focused on his driving I don’t think he would have noticed deer charging the vehicle head on, and it was probably some kids screwing around in the woods anyway, so I kept it to myself. But as we rounded a blind corner, three lights swung around in the brush off the road.
They looked like a pair of flashlight beams and an older lantern, kerosene maybe, bobbing up and down. Tom slowed the SUV to a stop, staring at the flashlights oddly. His head was cocked to the side, like he was trying to hear something better, and his eyes tried to track all three lights despite them bobbing in different patterns.
“Looks like some people need help.” He said, slowly breaking off from the lights to look at me. I was struggling to find the right words to tell him this was a bad idea; something was wrong when he put the SUV in park and started to undo his seatbelt. “I’ll hop out and see if they need a ride back to the road.”
The weird rule came back to me and I grabbed Tom’s arm, gripping it tightly. “Tom, the rules say to look for a car’s hazard lights, and I don’t see any cars around. How did they get out here? It’s like a thirty-minute hike from anywhere they could have parked a car.”
“They’re probably just dumb kids who got lost in the woods. It’s our job to help people out, remember?” Tom tugged his arm out of my grip, and grabbed a flashlight, one of the few pieces of equipment remaining in SUV, out from the back seat. It was a big spotlight style flashlight, but as he flicked the on switch, only a dim yellow glow drifted out of the bulb.
Tom smacked it a couple times, but the light didn’t brighten much. As he opened the door and slid out of the driver seat, I switched on the SUVs mobile radio and started to broadcast. “Dispatch, this is EMT Garcia in Vehicle 22, do you read, over?” Tom walked out into the center of the one-lane dirt road, his flashlight’s batter dying by the minute.
Tom started to sweep the dying spotlight around the forest’s edge as the radio crackled with Dispatch’s response. “We read you Garcia. What’s the situation, over?”
“EMT Williams has stepped out of the vehicle to investigate some flashlight beams we can see in the brush nearby. Looks like three of them, over.” As I finished speaking into the radio receiver, I realized that there were way more than three lights in the forest now. A dozen more lights came to life behind the first three, and at least that many more lit up the forest on the other side of the road.
The new lights were far more varied then the first three. Some looked like modern flashlights, their beams bouncing off of trees and bushes. Others looked like lanterns, their light ruddy oranges, and yellows. A few even appeared to be torches, casting a sinister red light around them. The lights looked wrong somehow, and then it hit me. I couldn’t see anyone holding the lights. The flashlights I could buy not seeing the person who held them, but the lanterns and torches would have to illuminate the bearers.
The radio started talking again, and this time the voice on the other side was laced with as much panic as static. “Do not leave the car. Try to get Williams back into the car, now. And then get the hell out of there, immediately.”
I unbuckled my seatbelt and leaned out of the open driver’s side door as far as I could safely. “Tom! Dispatch wants us back at the hospital!” I yelled at him, hoping that would get him moving. But he just stood there now, his dimming flashlight held loosely to his side, pointing at the ground. Then the lights began to get slowly closer. “Tom! Let’s go!” Still nothing, not even a twitch to show he had registered I existed, let alone that he’d heard me.
“Dispatch, Williams isn’t responding. I’m going to go get him, over.” Not waiting for the dispatcher to try and stop me, I pulled myself back to my side of the SUV and opened my door. Carefully, I stepped out onto the road, and walked over to Tom. “Hey, buddy, you okay?” I asked as I reached out to grab his shoulder.
Tom may have been made of soft wax for all of the response he gave. Only his thin wheezing breath told me he hadn’t died standing up somehow. I shook him, and he swayed for a moment before coming back to rest. I walked around to face him and tried to look into his eyes. They were unfocused, blank, and unseeing. I started to reach for him again, but before I touched him, a noise started to come his mouth.
It started as a low moan, deep in his chest, but as it gained in volume, it became higher and shriller, becoming a scream of pure fear and insanity. I had to cover my ears and back away from the cacophony, away from Tom’s madness. As suddenly as it began, the scream cut off, leaving the forest quieter than the grave. My own footsteps seemed muffled as I backed away towards the SUV, uncovering my ears as I went. I closed the passenger door, trying not to break the immense silence that built around us, and started to climb into the disturbingly silent vehicle. All the while Tom continued to stare unseeing into the darkness peppered with the ever-encroaching lights.
And we simply remained there, Tom standing in the center of the road, and I watching from the SUV’s driver seat, unsure what I could do, or if I even should, for what felt like hours, but the SUV’s clock told me was only a few minutes. All the while, the lights grew closer, never rushing, and their numbers ever growing. First a dozen more on each side, then a hundred, then a thousand, until I couldn’t understand why the whole forest wasn’t lit up by their light.
Finally, a flickering orange yellow campfire light reached the edge of the road. I still couldn’t see what held it up, just the light itself. It was the size of my fist and hung there five maybe six feet in the air. Flickering is the wrong word for what it was doing to create different colors across its surface; the surface was mottled in a thousand shades of yellow and orange, and those colors seemed to dance and shift second to second.
Long seconds went by, but it approached no closer, apparently content to sit at the edge of the forest, its colors dancing. Tom however began to change. His head snapped to where the orb hung, and I could just see his left eye lose its distance and focus on the light. He started to walk towards the orb as if in a dream, stumbling and shuffling at the same time. I realized it might be my last chance to try and bring him out of this trance, broke the silence, laying into the SUV’s horn.
Tom stopped for a second and looked at the SUV. I thought I had finally gotten through to him and started to roll down the window. Before I could tell him to get in the car, his head returned to the orb, and he began his walk towards the forest again. I honked the horn again, but he didn’t react at all this time, just continued his slow walk to the trees.
I watched him step past the orb, going ever deeper into the dark trees. Quickly, I couldn’t make him out, just the dim yellow light from his flashlight’s dying battery, and eventually not even that. The other lights, orbs, stayed surrounding me for another five minutes before I rolled the window back up, put the SUV in drive and rolled away from them. They followed me for a few miles, but stopped once I reached one of the battered, but paved, roads.
I drove the hour or more it took to reach Hillhaven General in silence, trying to gather my thoughts and put them in an order that made any sense to me, let alone anyone I’d try and tell this insane story to. When I reached the vehicle bay and parked the SUV in its customary spot, Richard, guy who ran the motor pool took me aside, leading me away from the other people working there, and into his office.
He sat me in the one other chair of the office, and sat at his desk, patiently waiting for me to start the conversation. I tried a dozen times, but each word died on my tongue unspoken. Finally, I asked, “What do we tell his family?”
Richard nodded his head slowly. “He finished his shift like normal, but you thought he was acting weird. He got in his car and drove off, for home we guessed. When he doesn’t come in tomorrow, someone will call his home, and either we’ll be ‘told’ he never returned home, or nobody will pick up. Eventually, he’ll be another missing person’s case, and the Lord knows we got enough of those.”
“What were they? The orbs?”
“Nobody’s sure kid, they’ve been around forever. You said you had lived here when you were a kid, right? But you moved before you learned to drive, didn’t you?” I nodded my head. “If you’d learned here, you probably woulda been taught to avoid them.”
We sat there, neither speaking for a long minute. “What do we do now?” I asked, fairly sure what the answer was.
“We move on, and you try to get past it. If you wanna quit, we understand, but would prefer you didn’t. Most folk don’t come back from seeing them, they just go away like Williams did.” I nodded and left.
I ended up taking a week off but did return to the hospital. They kept me on day shifts for a couple months, better to keep an eye on me, I guess. I moved back onto the night shift, and have had a few different co-drivers since then, all locals that don’t need to be told why not to leave the vehicle at night along empty roads when a couple flashlights try to flag you down.

2020.11.24 23:21 dusmeyedin Tenebraevorax, the Undercity Oracle of Il Aluk

Canon:
None, this character is entirely my creation.
Meta: The ninth in my occasional series of unique Kargat leaders, including:
This vampire is intended to be a closer stylistic design to a nosferatu, the feral ghoul-like plague vampire from older European lore and made famous by Count Orlok in the movie Nosferatu. Its clearly monstrous appearance makes it less suitable as an active interloper in the world of the living, so I designed it functionally to act as a static brooding evil observer, closely tied to the territory of Il Aluk and keeping a constant vigil over the city's underworld. Its thematic affinities are swarms of insects and rats, the scourge of devouring vermin, and the ability to gain a creature's knowledge by consuming it - although the weight of centuries of collected knowledge are weighing down its weary consciousness.
Backstory:
Tenebraevorax ("The Dark Eater") is closely tied to the city of Il Aluk and actually predates the Kargat and the current king's own regime. During his own campaign to assume rulership of Darkon, Azalin found the nosferatu in the long-buried catacombs beneath the city, resting in a dungeon complex that was possibly an ancient royal fortress. Given the extreme duration of Azalin's own regime as an undead ruler, and the previous wizard kings of Darkonian history who magically extended their own lifespans, Tenebraevorax may be the oldest continuous consciousness in all of Darkon. Despite this, Tenebraevorax's sphere of interest and its powerful perception is strictly limited to the city. Several theories circulate about its supernatural origin - the current fashion assumes that Tenebraevorax was some sort of quasi-deified forgotten king, buried where he ruled, and dedicated to protect the city in a ritual gone wrong.
Intrigued by the vampire's ability to gain the memories directly through eating living creatures, Azalin set up a Kargat branch to provide it with a steady diet of prisoners, as well as to coordinate Kargat operations in the vast capital. Although technically a Capitus (General) in the secret police, Tenebraevorax is perhaps better classified as an oracular source - the high Kargat rank is more a courtesy title, imposing a line of command for the numerous lesser Kargat who rely on its knowledge to police the capital area.
Appearance:
Tenebraevorax is a wizened, hairless humanoid with two sharp incisor teeth, disproportionately large ears, and elongated claws on its hands and feet. It has no external gender characteristics and appears to be completely neuter. Its skin is deathly pale from centuries spent underground, and a scent of rot and decay surrounds it. The current Kargat minders keep it swaddled in funeral robes, though its frequent feedings leave bloodstains and gore on the sleeves and tunic of its raiments. On the rare occasions that Tenebraevorax is roused from slumber, it habitually tears away its robes to stalk the tunnels as an emaciated, sexless pale corpse.
It spends most of its time sleeping, occasionally uttering mysterious prophecies, which its Kargat attendants immediately transcribe and cross-reference. Often, the Kargat agents bring significant captives to feed it (sometimes shapechanged into vermin for easy consumption), adding their living memories to its already-impressive collection.
The nosferatu's reposing body is periodically visited by swarms of vermin, ranging in animal size from tiny midges and gnats to sewer rats. These creatures also share their combined senses and memories with their master, giving Tenebraevorax a constant stream of dreamed awareness about the city's underworld and dealings.
Personality:
When awake, Tenebraevorax is extremely powerful, and could be a potent threat to the Kargat... if it weren't halfway gone into senescence already. Now concerned only with its dreams of a million eyes on the city, Tenebraevorax is ill-tempered and loth to be disturbed, forcing its Kargat handlers to tread carefully. Usually, the Kargat feed Tenebraevorax at dawn, allowing it the day's slumber to digest the memories of its victims and continue its dream of the city. Typically, Tenebraevorax issues its utterances in the mid-afternoon, and the Kargat can adjust their operations accordingly by the dusk dispatch.
Tenebraevorax no longer understands any current language, and it speaks its prophecies and commands in a distant early dialect of Darkonian spoken only by a specific noble dynasty. The Kargat officers in its supporting crypt must rely heavily on magical assistance to decode its statements. When awake, Tenebraevorax is neither able to, nor interested in, understanding any mortal tongue. It can absorb knowledge through its Mind Probe and Mind Reading abilities without needing any intervening linguistic medium.
On the few occasions when Tenebraevorax has stirred in its sleep, the Kargat have relied on magical standbys to return it to slumber.
Invitation:
Tenebraevorax rarely moves, except to control its swarms of vermin. Neither the nosferatu nor its swarms need any invitation to enter buildings in and around the city center of Il Aluk (roughly corresponding to the historical limits of the old city when Tenebraevorax walked the earth). It is unknown whether nosferatu or swarms can venture outside of the city.
Sustenance:
Tenebraevorax feeds on the flesh and blood of living animals, although it can go for long periods of hibernation without feeding. It can also absorb the memories of creatures it devours, with simple beasts absorbed instantaneously (thus making rats, bats, insects, etc. a good source of up-to-date intel of things all around the city) but more sophisticated memories typically requiring several hours of digestion and dreamwork to properly analyze.
Sleep:
Tenebraevorax requires sleep in its Ancient Royal Crypt several levels below the surface of Il Aluk, and it will lose HP at a rate of 1/10 minutes spent away from the crypt. The external vermin swarms under its mind control have no such limitation, but the personal vermin swarm that it can shapeshift into does observe this limitation.
Tenebraevorax's requirements for sleep have steadily increased in recent years, as the strain of consciousness (and the increasing burden of the accumulated memories in its psyche) is taking its toll. Ever obsessed with recordkeeping innovations, Azalin initially prioritized research into Tenebraevorax's strange mnemophagic abilities, but discontinued it after witnessing the limitations on Tenebraevorax's mental functions.
Movement and Shapechanging:
Tenebraevorax has preternatural speed when it is active. If forced to a dead end, Tenebraevorax can shapeshift into a swarm of rats to swamp and attack its assailants, or it can shapeshift into a swarm of flying insects and slip through any permeable surface (including clothes after 2 seconds and metal armor after 5 seconds).
Bite:
Tenebraevorax's bite attack is able to heal it 1 HP per 3 HP drained, and it can drain up to 9 HP per second.
Combat:
With Altered Time Rate, Tenebraevorax can mentally react twice as fast as most mortals in combat situations, often taking monster hunters by surprise even when they have it cornered in its Royal Crypt. The nosferatu can also cause heavy damage with its hand and feet claws, and can overwhelm an isolated living foe by drinking its blood. Even if a combat goes against Tenebraevorax, the nosferatu typically assumes swarm form and retreats to regroup and strike again.
Death:
It is suspected that Tenebraevorax can be permanently destroyed by despoiling its Royal Crypt or otherwise making it impossible for Tenebraevorax to heal while inside it - one potential plan by Azalin involves flooding the crypt with water channeled through a series of blessing sluices to sanctify it.
Less terminally, the Kargat has dealt with several of Tenebraevorax's destructive rampages before, and has built a containment mechanism: upon trigger, two main access tunnels (underneath one of the large manmade shipping canals of Il Aluk) will flood the tunnels with riverwater. This may not kill Tenebraevorax but it is likely to delay it, even in gnat swarm Diffuse Form, at least long enough for Azalin to put more permanent countermeasures in place.
For PCs:
Tenebraevorax is a largely immobile enemy, more a genius loci than an evil genius. Even when active, Tenebraevorax is limited in its range to the Old City limits - meaning that PCs could conceivably escape it by a mad dash out of the dungeon and back across into the modern city streets. Its unmoving nature makes it highly suitable for the culmination of a more traditional dungeon delve adventure. Early encounters can introduce its vermin servitors, and possibly Kargat shapechangers of fitting species - wererats and werebats would be especially appropriate. (PCs may also potentially encounter Tenebraevorax after reacting to a series of spying vermin, perhaps incorrectly believing them to be wizards' familiars or other minor servitors. Attempting to mind-control the vermin swarms, or otherwise interact with them magically, will suddenly reveal that a profound and massively powerful intellect is controlling these swarms.)
For campaigns set around Il Aluk, Tenebraevorax's dungeon can be a focal point for a plot arc aimed at destabilizing the Kargat. The dungeon was once a military installation above-ground in a forgotten dead dynasty, and it became an archeological buried site in the intervening centuries. The most recent king before Azalin repurposed it in part as an emergency underground command and supply network, in case the other Conclave kings attacked the city (and a few points of secure access to the overworld still exist - including access shafts for sending and receiving messenger birds and other logistics).
For those truly interested in a megadungeon, perhaps the dungeon of Tenebraevorax contains some access points to the fabled Black Vault of Azalin, an even more ambitious compound created by the lich lord to contain even more arcane dangers.

2020.11.24 21:34 Quick_Hovercraft_268 I [M23] am in love like never before. But I’m so scared of messing things up.

Spool back two weeks. I [M23, Europe] get assigned to work with a girl [F22] in a university class project. I don’t know her, never met her.
Because of Covid, all classes are remotely on Zoom at this time.
I figure out that perhaps we should talk on the phone about our project. I message her on the student portal and ask for her number, she gives it and says I could call any time.
I call her up, we talk for a while about the project, before drifting off into other topics. The conversation is flowing so easily and so deep and interesting, and we figure out that we have a lot of the same interests in common (literature, travel, philosophy). After 3 and a half hours that pass by at lightning speed, at 1:30 AM in the morning, we hang up even though we both want to continue talking through the night. She says that she will go to the library the next day to study (which is still open), and that I could come with her and we could have lunch together. I of course agree.
I remember I couldn’t sleep at all, I knew I had met my soulmate.
The next day and the days after, I get to the library, we sit there studying, and take long, long breaks with the same endless, interesting talks. In the evenings we chat for hours on Whatsapp.
I learn more and more about her, and she about me. The most interesting conversations are about our personal backgrounds and childhood and how they have shaped us. After a while, we talk about relationships, past experiences and find out that we are 100% on the same page in our view of what is important in a relationship and how to make it work.
One night, I’m sitting in bed, after we’ve yet again talked until early in the morning about philosophical questions, travels, and other incredibly interesting stuff. I realise that I’m in love like I never have been before. And that without giving what have mattered to me in previous dates and relationships (looks, style of clothing, food preferences, background, etc) a single thought. For the first time, I’ve fallen in love with a person at a truly substantial level.
More days pass, more talking, and then one day last week we’re both studying at home, when she says she wants to get out of her apartment for a while and asks if I want a coffee. We go to a coffee place near her, and that little coffee break turns into a three hour chat - the manager had to throw us out at closing time. We walk to the bus stop, I thought she would just go home because it was 15 minutes until the bus came. But no, she wanted to wait there with me and continue talking. When the bus finally arrived, we gave eachother one big, long hug.
And then today, we’ve agreed that on Friday, we will drink wine, talk and maybe watch a movie at her place. All bars are closed in our country, so there’s really no other place to drink alcohol than in private homes anyway.
I’m so nervous about this upcoming meeting. I know very well that I should try to make a move, but I’m very afraid that she’s going to reject me and that I have misunderstood everything.
There has not been one single moment of embarrassing silence when we’ve talked together, but that can of course change if she gets to know that I want something different than her. That would not be very cool because I, for one, would love to have her as a friend, and the school project would not be so fun to work on in this situation. And last, but not least, the heartbreak. She’s literally the partner I had imagined in my dreams, and I’m in love like I’ve never been before.
What would you do? I’m thinking about, on Friday, playfully hugging and touching her before maybe moving on to see if she wants to cuddle more. I’m NOT (only) after sex with her, this is a lasting relationship or nothing.
Tl;dr: In love like never before, scared of fucking up with the consequences it will have for myself and a school project I’m working on with the girl.

2020.11.24 20:25 M4rshmall0wMan Apple TV freezes after a few minutes

I'm using Shadow on my Apple TV 4k with Ethernet (50mbps) and while the image quality/framerate are great (albeit with some latency), I find that my video freezes after only a few minutes of play. The audio continues, but the video is frozen and won't unfreeze unless I restart streaming.
This is really annoying, and it's the only thing getting in the way of using my Apple TV as a console substitute. I've tried lowering bandwidth, changing codecs, etc, but the problem continues. Does anyone know how to fix it?

2020.11.24 19:26 shambooki Xfinity Internet Speeds Slowed in Past Week

Hello. I'm having issues with my Xfinity internet and I'm hoping someone can help me troubleshoot. I'm paying for 200mbps internet. Until about a week ago I was testing slightly above that, in the 220-230mbps range. This has been consistent for the past year since I first purchased the service. In the past week, I have been running closer to 20-30mbps. I've run speed tests on wifi and ethernet in various configurations and I'm always stuck in this range.
My equipment is all self supplied as follows:
Troubleshooting I've already tried:
All speed tests show the same 20-30mbps range regardless of if I'm on wifi or ethernet and regardless of which equipment is present in the connection.
The only things that have changed in the past week when this change occurred are:
At this point, I'm not sure where else to look. I'm beginning to think that Xfinity has begun throttling my internet since my contract has expired. I am 100% positive I was clocking ~230mbps on 11/10 (I ran a test before downloading an expansion for a video game that released on this date) and my contract expired 11/14, after which I have been unable to get much higher than 30mbps. Any help or insight you can provide would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for taking the time to read and respond.

2020.11.24 17:57 UniqueApe3 I was addicted to Xanax at university... here's what happened

We're in lockdown, I'm new to Reddit and I've had plenty of time to do some reflecting over the past few weeks. So let me play the devil's advocate and share a few of my most fucked up and best moments of my life as a student in the UK. Before you read, please remember I was heavily addicted to Xanax and would not recommend/advise anyone to try Xanax recreationally let alone any other substance unless advised to do so by a medical professional. I hope this opens some eyes to the potential dangers that substance abuse can cause.
Have you ever taken Xanax after indulging in what was only meant to be one, but seven bars throughout the course of an evening? Waking up days later or even in a prison cell thinking, "I'm never going to do this again", to find yourself waiting outside your dealers' university halls the same evening? That was basically the 'story of my life' throughout my second and third year of university as a Business and Finance student.
Pretty little demons aren't they. The instant relief of anxiety, stress, pain, and hurt, what's there not to love? Being able to avoid and hide away from what I thought at the time were the harsh realities of the world and the burdens of my life, whilst of course, jeopardize your whole student life, fucking up your memory, and hurting the ones you love without even knowing whats going on because you're basically a half-functioning zombie. Let me just point out, the majority of 'Xanax bars' in the UK are fake as shit, produced by a backyard pharmacist, well hey, they were also cheap as chips, why would I care? Who knows what the fuck I was really feeding my body and mind with...till this day I feel as if my memory has never fully recovered...
During my first year of university in 2016, I was somewhat sober, I smoked weed every day, hit the occasional bomb of mandy, and indulged in a line or two of coke here and there, what university student didn't? I suffered a few broken bones but everything was fine and there was no real cause for concern, I passed my first year with flying colors.
The following year is where the real action happened when I started dating this girl, let's call her Sophie. She was an innocent-looking character; tiny, beautiful, and full of experience, there was something about her so remarkably alluring I couldn't help but become tied up in a relationship with her. She looked fragile and had an extreme sense of mystery, I was instantly attached from the moment I'd laid eyes on her in my first year, it was magical yet mythical, a perfect recipe for disaster.
After a few rocky weeks of dating later, Sophie was basically living with me at my uni accommodation, it turns out that the reason she looked so fragile was that she had difficulty swallowing and digesting the food she ate or drank. Every time she tried to eat or drink anything she would regurgitate 80% of whatever she tried to put down her mouth...horrible I know. When we'd go for dinner she would have to run to the bathroom at least five times within the space of half an hour to throw-up her food before we decide to take the food home and leave the restaurant early. Imagine as a student having to stay at home whilst your friends have gone for dinner to avoid the embarrassment of throwing up your food or worrying how long it will take you to get drunk when you want to go clubbing, not even doctors knew why this was happening. Though, as she drank more alcohol, it became easier for Sophie to eat and drink, maybe it was anxiety that was preventing her from swallowing and digesting her food? No one knew, this went on until May 2017, that's when I introduced her to Xanax.
Ok, I'm not saying that Xanax cured her but it sure did help. I'd taken Xanax before on flights, only about 1mg to put me to sleep, never would I have thought I would be playing the role of 'doctor' and prescribing it to my girlfriend to try to get her to eat and drink properly. I barely had any experience with the drug and I am certainly not a medical professional. The first time we took a Xanax together, we started with half a bar on an empty stomach, smoked a joint, ordered dominoes, and then we waited, patiently, curious to see whether I should have actually been studying medicine or not, it was a miracle. Sophie's digestion improved dramatically and we even ordered another pizza, although she was probably only 60% better it was a massive improvement, maybe I was coming on to something? At least after our exams, if we tried 0.25mg it might still have the same effect whilst being able to function in the day-time.
Unfortunately, everything went in a down-hill spiral. Second-year studies had finished, and Sophie had her third-year university house throughout the whole of the Summer so we would stay there for weeks at a time whilst she attended her therapy sessions and I was re-sitting exams. It was not easy to study when our daily habits would consist of; fucking, popping xanz, and ordering dominos and a bunch of desserts, we both suffered from our own underlying sadness which made the Xanax even more seductive. Xanax is all fun and games until they start to wear off, which is quite quickly given their short half-life, hence why the urges to take more prevailed, you literally can become the devil, and this time, Sophie burst into flames.
I remember waking up in the middle of the night to see Sophie crying hysterically, she was sat in the middle of the floor, eyeballing herself in the mirror, a devilish stare. To this day I would always wonder what was going through her mind, it certainly wasn't pleasant. All of a sudden...Bam. At the beginning of what was about to be an extremely long night, she smashes the mirror against the wall along with everything she could find within her reach. The Xanax was leaving both of our systems and devil modes kicked in. I tried to calm her down but she wouldn't stop. Blood dripping down walls, hours of shouting, glass shattered, ripped clothes everywhere, and some cuts and bruises later, as things started to calm down. We heard footsteps creeping up the stairs towards the room where Sophie and I had been arguing, it must have been around 6 am - my timeline is based on flashbacks of the event, it was two police officers. They came to check on us as there were multiple calls from concerned neighbors, I'm not surprised, it must have sounded like a murder scene. They took us both to separate rooms and questioned us, they wanted to make sure that I had not violently abused Sophie as she had loads of scratches and bruises across her arms from the smashed glass (I would never hit her). After speaking with them individually for about 10 minutes and telling them it was just a heated argument, the police soon dispersed. I thought the nightmare had ended, but things got worse, Sophie ran downstairs and locked herself in the bathroom. After about 5 minutes locked inside, she walks out having drunk fucking bleach! Major panic mode, the devils had possessed her, I immediately called for an ambulance. When we reached the hospital, Sophie felt fine, she did not consume enough for the bleach to have any serious effect. The doctors tried to section her but she refused and we left the hospital, went back to her university house, finished the remaining bag of the Xanax that evening, and went to the zoo the next morning as if nothing had happened.
My relationship with Sophie was extremely toxic. Even though we had a deep, unconditional love for each other, we always found a way to hurt one another, it was a constant mental battle between us to see who could end up on top but the truth is, we both ended up at the bottom, the only people we were damaging was ourselves. It was strange, every time we'd go through one of these episodes, there were a few, I would feel a stronger connection towards her, these moments would make me feel closer with her and I would learn to understand her better. This was just the first of many of our heated discussions, we were together for 3 years and lived with each other. Depression and anxiety consumed us, so we depended on substances and our lust for each other to fight our troubles. Throughout that Summer, Xanax would become apart of my daily routine, starting my mornings with 0.5mg of Xanax and by the time it was nighttime, I would have finished my whole baggy of bars without even realizing, It felt amazing. Days were flying by and I was anxiety-free.
It's the begging of September 2017, two weeks before the start of my third year at university. My ex-girlfriend, funnily enough also called Sophie, who'd I'd remained friends with, but had broken up with her towards the end of my first year in 2016, wanted to take me out for a birthday dinner. I was still dating Sophie, who had gone traveling at the time, trashy on my part - which leads me to more disasters down the road. Nevertheless, I still agreed to go for dinner at a fancy Chinese restaurant in London with my ex-girlfriend. Dinner was arranged for 7:30 pm and I was supposed to collect her at 6:30 pm and drive towards town, I'd already taken a bar and a half that earlier that day and I arrive to pick her up 30 minutes later than expected. Understandably, she was fuming. This was planned weeks in advance and I'd promised her that I wouldn't bail or be late. To calm her down I told her to take half a bar (she's never taken Xanax before but knew that I was regularly taking them) and I would take the other half, we continued to drive to town and made it to the restaurant at 8 pm.
We walk into the restaurant and Sophie still won't stop complaining about me showing up late. She eventually drops the topic, we are seated at our table and continue to enjoy our evening, two bottles of wine down and we are both quite drunk, forgetting we had even taken Xanax. If you don't know, Xanax + Alcohol = Date rape. Yes, we accidentally date-raped ourselves, both of us were a complete mess and all over the place, we took a photo together which will always be the most unforgettable - forgettable photo of one of the most memorable - unmemorable nights, of a day which happened but I was was too conked out to embrace what was going on around me. Sophie paid the expensive bill for a dinner she would wake up the following morning not being able to remember. As we stood up from the table and headed towards the exit, Sophie tripped down a small flight of stairs, badly bruised her knee, and smashing her phone, she was in tears, It was like a scene out of The Wolf of Wall Street where Jordan and Donny get extremely fucked up on quaaludes and they are both out of control in the kitchen. I held her back towards my car, took half a bar, and we headed towards my house. I don't really remember the drive back home, but we just about made it back in one piece. About 5 minutes before we reach home I curbed my car over the middle of an island and two of my tires instantly pop, In sudden shock, I look over to see my ex-girlfriend laying knocked out in the passenger seat, completely oblivious as to what had just happened, and continued to drive, slowly on the rims of my car. We reached back home and I wake up Sophie, the poor girl was awfully confused, I knew she was going to kill me the next day. We jumped in my mum's convertible and I dropped Sophie home, uninsured, whilst blasting music with the roof down.
The same night around 1:30 am, one of my friends was coming to meet me and we were to head towards a small house gathering just 10 minutes down the road. James arrives at my house and we proceed to take some more Xanax and some coke so that I am "functional" enough to drive us to the gathering. I decided to take my car even though I was two tires down, the drugs gave me super-human confidence to think I would be able to successfully drive to the gathering. In and out of consciousness and driving at snail speed for about 20 minutes with weed, coke, Xanax in large amounts in my car, we were close to our destination, I could see the finish line. All of a sudden, blue flashing lights appear in my rear-view mirror, I was pulled over. When questioned, I couldn't help but slumber my words. We were handcuffed and taken to the station, where we would spend our night in a cell.
Just a couple of stories. Xanz is a hell of a drug. Thanks to those who took their time out to read this, it was therapeutic to write. Please be cautious if you're curious about trying a new substance, even if it's pharmaceutically prescribed, read up on what you are about to take, learn the side-effects, and be safe!
Always binge narcotics responsibly.
Would love to hear some of your experiences! Share below x
